New Brodix 400 replacement block
I saw something the other day at a buddy's shop that was cool. A new 400 block from Brodix. 75lbs lighter than a little M and cost about $1400.00. It had three freeze plug holes and has 350 size mains. They came from PBM Performance. The shop I hang out at just about refuses to build a stock 400 block because the castings are so poor.
Re: New Brodix 400 replacement block
You mean $4,100, not $1,400. If the block was $1,400 it is used, and probably been repaired once or twice. If they were $1,400 you would see a large number of these flying around.
The Brodix blocks are nice. I am not sure about any shop that refuses to build 400's because the blocks are so poor. People have built 4.25" bore engines off of the stock 400 blocks. These blocks have also been pushed to over 600 HP. Grumpy Bill Jenkins ran these closer to 700 HP at high RPM with some cap work to support and align the 2 BOLT CAPS he ran on these engines.
Granted, a random number of blocks were poorly casted and would not be good for high power or big overbores. Anyone deciding to really push the limits of a factory block should also be making an effort to find a solid core. It sounds like your shop wasn't doing this and broke a few bad castings and decided the casting errors were common to all 400 blocks.

NO $1400.00 and yes its new out of the box. A Little "m" is only $2500.00. Bill Jenkins ran the blocks new not 35 years old. .PSI has a great reputaion and does not want to tarnish it by sending out junk. When you use a old block you are taking a chance. It's your car and your cash. They will build you a engine with a old 400 block if thats what you want. I was wrong it is a DART not Brodix.
