Could i get some camshaft help?
Well. Things have been pretty rough financially and i'm forced to go back to my L98 build for now. It looks like i will not have any extra money to build the engine for roughly 6 years (college) as work simply cannot be found locally. Times are pretty rough around here if you don't have a job.
anyways, i still have enough money to do a stout street car to last be through college till i have a real job. I was planning:
~My L98
~Dyno Don's shorties
~dual magnaflow cats
~Custom fabbed Y-pipe
~Hooker/Magnaflow 3in single cat-back
~FIRST intake (basically a big TPI) http://firstfuelinjection.com/products.htm
~Custom fabbed CIA
but i also want to do a cam that will match well with this setup. Somthing streetable but still with a big bite to it up high because that FIRST system is showing shocking results on the few members cars who have it. I have finally managed to understand the basics of camshafts, but i still can't find exactly what i am looking for without going a custom grind, so could anyone here suggest a good camshaft for me?
Thanks

First investments should go to the rear end gearing and sfc.

Are you planning on using the stock computer? If you do, I have heard of people obtaining good results with the xr264hr12 from comp cams. You may want to call the guys at comp cams and tell them what you are planning on doing. I found them to be actually very helpful.

Yes i am using the stock computer, however i plan on getting it tuned on a dyno since i know some people. That way it should work as well as possible with the stock computer.
The cam i was going to order if no one told me anything different was actually that same cam.

Re: Could i get some camshaft help?
I would recommend the xr264hr as well, if you have 3.08 gears and mild mods as mentioned.
I might get it on the 114 LSA however.

Re: Could i get some camshaft help?
this is the best can i could find with 114 on a quick look. Says its for TPI engines w/ modified plenum and runners, which is exactly what the FIRST system i (high modified plenum/runner would be its catagory i suppose)
http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Ca...?csid=213&sb=2
this also looked like a good cam:
http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Ca...?csid=208&sb=0
and
http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Ca...?csid=195&sb=2
remember, the FIRST system should flow ALOT more air, so shouldn't i be looking at somthing around or in the 1000-6000 RPM area?? maybe shift at 5800? so cam from maybe 1500-5500?? Thats just me rambling with the tiny knowledge i have.
and this is the cam you were suggesting right?
http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Ca...?csid=186&sb=2
or was it this one
http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Ca...?csid=194&sb=2

Re: Could i get some camshaft help?
Yes, the cam that I was suggesting is the one that has the 112 degree LSA, xr264hr12. I didn't know that they offer the same cam with a 114 degree LSA.
I currently run the xr258hr12 in my 305TPI. It is a slightly smaller cam than the xr264hr12, and seems to be working ok with the stock speed density computer. Wouldn't a larger overlap be better since it promotes better cylinder filling due to the exhaust gases creating a slight supercharging effect as they exit the combustion chamber? The 112 LSA is still a very streetable cam with a very very mild lope.

That's right, but that's hard to quantify. Then why wouldn't 110 be better? Or 108? Well, David Vizard says a 108 is "perfect" for 350 cubic inches, in his opinion, however fuel injection can't tolerate that. When the cam gets bigger and bigger, the LSA has to stay in a more specific range to get it to work right.
You're not going to gain much from shrinking the LSA anyway, but from widening it you will avoid the *possible* headache of tuning issues.
The first one in his post the xr266hr14, would work great.

It will run up higher in the RPM band then it specs, if your heads and induction support it.

Re: Could i get some camshaft help?
What about this:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...8&autoview=sku
with some roller rockers (1.5 or 1.6?) since i should probably replace all those pieces too. It is a 166k mile L98 anyways...
Only thing about that is, why is the timing chain non-roller? I thought the best you could buy was double roller?

Re: Could i get some camshaft help?
i am in the same boat: Tha Cam Quest. i was looking into the 60101 by Lunati(Voodoo Division):
Hydraulic. Best mild performance cam. Works excellent in TPI fuel injection applications. Makes approximately 19 vacuum at idle. Great for performance oriented marine applications and heavy towing applications. Perfect Street Rod cam. Has slightly noticeable idle, works with stock converter, A/C.
Jobber Price: $125.99
the only thing is i dont know how to find out what the lift will be with 1.6:1 RR's. They say rule of thumb is to add .030 to the lift???
also the XFI cams by CompCams. the 260XFI and 268XFI caught my eye, just cuz i have the stock intake.
----------
and what is a good LSA for Speed density TPI cars.
112* or 113* or 114* etc?

thats really cheap if its a hydraulic roller camshaft, but i am assuming it is simply a hydraulic cam?
I'm looking for a hydraulic roller

Im pretty sure its hydraulic roller because in their 300 page paper catalog this cam was under the oem Hyd roller cams section and since their page is under construction it might be wrong on theior site... but this is the price i ran into at work with my discount
i love getting paid to shop for my car! Member
