Gas boiling in tank

I had my smog check today, and when the tech screwed in the gas cap for the EVAP test after the car had been idling for a good 35 minutes he noticed HOT air coming out. VERY hot, as in, too hot to touch. I felt it and noticed that as I touched it, it would condense on my finger and I realized it was gasoline by the smell.

Its a very hot day. I didn't think my exhaust was too close to the tank, but I guess it may be. Anybody ever have this before? Anything else that can cause my gasoline to boil?

Also, this may be a stupid question, but how dangerous is this? It's a non vented vap so of course it hisses when I take it off. Should I not drive the car?

I should mention that I am using a Delco TPI pump reg'd to 13 PSI for my TBI. Not sure if this matters.

Re: Gas boiling in tank

My gas does the same thing after my aftermarket exhaust. That is just too much idling.

Re: Gas boiling in tank

Make sure all your fuel lines are away from your exhaust. Also make sure that you don't have any exhaust leaks that are underneath the tank on the top side of the exhaust pipe.
