So what cam do I want? I would like some input!

Hey, First off, what is up? Second Yes I know how to use the search button but found nothing to help my situation. I have a 1987 305 4BBL/ T-5. Anyway I'm gonna rebuild the whole thing this fall with my friends. (we are all going to school in the fall for automotive techs. don't worry LOL) My poor 305/Rochester have 140K well unmaintained beat miles on them and it's dog slow, and can have the fogger machines that come down your street spraying mosquitoes run for their money, especially at WOT LOL. I'm planing on new intake manifold, carb, headers, complete upper end rebuild and piston rings and anything else that the book says is out of spec (thank the lord for that guy, Haynes ) I want to get a mild cam. Something that lopes a little (it's a carbed 305- it did not go annoyware when new and it ant going anywhere now unless I plant my self a $$$ tree, so I just want a mean sounding 305. The treads I've read are all for 86 and older 305's. Ones without roller lifters and cams. Mine was the first year for the rollers. I want to see if I can put in mechanical lifters and cam to it because 1. both parts for hydraulic type are 50% more $$$ and 2 that there seem to be more options out their for the old type. IF not thats fine, just someone tell me a good loping street cam. Part #'s, duration times, names, links are super! I really don't want to spend more than a $150. I don't want a cam that is made of metals I can't even say. It seems like 210-215's at .050" seem to be popular but IDK. Thanks for dealing with my wants.-irocin' Rick

if you want to put a non roller cam in a roller block you have to use a cam button

Me personally I would put a RV cam in it with 1.6 rockers

I have no idea what your talking about. When it comes to internals, I know close to nothing. So maybe it would be simpler spending so more money and getting a roller cam, but which one?

Re: So what cam do I want? I would like some input!

So I found a place that has all the cams I'd ever want. Anyway, I decided to go with whats in there now. But whats in there now exactly called? Is it considered:
Hydraulic roller tappet?
Mechanical roller tappet?
OR are they the same?
I would be better off buying a kit (with lifters included) so I know they wont fight each other, right? Those kits run 500-700$ Seem right
Thanks again

Re: So what cam do I want? I would like some input!

"Hydraulic Roller" is what you have now. "Mechanical Roller" is a solid lifter cam - most are far too aggressive for a small street motor like yours, and you dont want that. For a mostly stock rebuild, I would look at Comp Cams 'XE' hydraulic roller cams. They are a very good, modern grind. Look at the smaller one, something in the range of 210-218* duaration @ .050 lift. Most of the roller cams have higher lift, so you may need to have the valve guides cut on your heads to handle more lift.
Comp Cams XR264HR-12 would be a good cam to use (Summit PN is CCA-08-501-8).

Ok thanks, then I'll go with that one. I hear the cam I got in the LG4 is really crappy one for performance and is designed for emissions and fuel economy. So I'd be looking at a pretty substantial HP/TQ increase with even a small cam correct? And also along with a aftermarket cam, would I have to get special rockers/valves/push rods/lifters to go with it from Comp cams or would the factory stock replacements I was going to gt at my local parts store be fine? Thank's for the help ppl! I'm learning!
