do you have to use sealant on head gaskets

i was just wondering if i did it right
this is for 89'iroc 350 5.7 l tpi
i used fel pro gaskets
put the metal strip facing down in between cylinders
and no rtv or anything
anyone know if this is the right way
would certainly appreciate it before i put everything back on
thank you
also i already torqued the heads ,it would not be as bad to re do
as to re do the hole job

thanks

no, don't need any rtv or other sealant for the headgaskets. i had some leaking around the lower studs till i put some sealant on them. the gaskets themselves should indicate which way they go on. one side of each gasket should read "UP" on it indicating that side should go toward the head.

Only if the gasket manufacturer says you do.

Also remember to put some of that liquid teflon thread sealent on all the bolts ...some of them go into water jackets.

Don't use sealant on the head gasket. If you use RTV on the head gasket It will leak and you will have to buy a new head gasket. Also make sure you torque the head bolts down to the right spec and in the right order.

Re: do you have to use sealant on head gaskets

No sealant on the head gaskets. The gasket will either have TOP or UP stamped in it. If not then and words stamped in the gasket will be facing up. About the only place you may put a little dab of sealant is at the very top of the ends where it will meet the intake gasket.

Most of the head bolts go into water jackets. A thread sealer should be used on the head bolts.

It won't hurt anything to remove the head and recheck the gasket if you're unsure on how you put it on. It hasn't gone through a heat cycle yet to affect the gasket.
