I have a 91 Camaro RS 305... on my way to work about a week ago it just randomly died on me so now i have the time to work on it for a few days finally i took battery out down to advanced auto they said its fine... took the alternator out and had that tested they said that also is fine... i put a brand new battery in it that i had because the voltage meter on the dash was way lower then where it should be. Still does the same thing. So ive tried starting it still and it just clicks... any one else have any more ideas as to what it could be or how to fix it? Already cleaned the terminals also

 

well if it just clicks but doesn't turn over it usually indicates a dead battery, but if you've replaced the battery than i would first look to make sure that you have proper grounds from the negative terminal and than if that's all fine and dandy i would go to the starter. it seems like the solenoid is working but the starter motor itself isn't working. i would get under the car and jump the terminals on the starter and see what happens.

I agree with the starter solenoid, the connections may be corroded and not have a good connection anymore. Try giving the connections a good cleaning and check the cables for rot and reattach. See if that gets it going, if it doesn't you can always take the starter off and get it checked like you did with the other parts. Tight squeeze but you can get it out, at least on my 305 LG4 I could.

 

well here's an update since it was bothering me earlier... i figured it couldnt have been the starter because it never gave a problem... so we kept the battery hooked up and put the charger on it that way then put it on crank... got it started and now its turning over every time without a problem i let it run for a good 15-20 mins. hard to tell what it is at this point because its soooo loud but it makes a god aweful screaching noise as whatever it may be. so from it doing that im thinking maybe not the starter? maybe they did a bad job checking the alternator? and the battery just didnt have enough unf behind it because before i put the battery in i tested it in my blazer n it fired right up.

 

just an update we got it running or so we thought... replaced everything alternator belt battery and tension pulley. and it was still doing it but not near as bad sounded decent so we took it out for a ride... had no power then it died after about 10 miles wouldnt restart again but it was trying... so i think im gonna say screw it and just put a 350 in it thats what ive wanted to do anyways...

 

If you just want an excuse to put a 350 in it, cool. But I helped a friend with a similar problem on a Z71 pick-up. Battery was fine, alternator was fine, I pulled the starter, which was a pain in the *** and took it to Autozone to be tested and it was fine. I gave up and my buddy took it to a shop ... ended up being a fuseable link. I have no experience with that, but it was a cheap fix at the shop. Might be something you want to look into.
