350 Vortec/e-tec assmebly ?s - Checking piston/Valve clearance

I just now assembled one head and am going to check piston-valve clearance. From what I have read, it should be fine but might as well check it so that I change my "slap everything together and worry about it later" attitude.

I am running: LT-4 hotcam w/ 1.6s, got the .1 longer pushrods. Don't know how to use the hydraulic lifter when they say to use a solid one, so I took some old lifters apart and grabbed the three or four of the spacers that sit under the pushrod cup so that it does not compress as much. Not sure if I should install the test spring I got. Might as well I guess. Using the clay method, but I might check it as well with a dial indicator.

I think the stock L31 shortblock has just a normal timing chain. Should this be OK, if not what is the best bang for the buck.

Got arp bolts and have to say according to their direction am scared into only using their assembly lube and thread sealant. I picked up some permatex 59214 thread sealant and some generlic assembly lube from sta-lube.

Also, I know that roller cams do not need moly base assembly lube, just white lithium grease on the bearing, lifter holes, and pushrod ends. Is plain jane white lithum ok for this? I used a combo of reg Wht lith and the spray can type by Liquid Wrench.

Also, I bought a high pressure oil spring. Should I use this or just run stock?

Thanks in Advance,
Mike

Pull the clay out of the CC. It appeared to be around .178 at the lowest and .212 at other part. I'm pretty sure I'm safe. What should have been the total thickness of the clay to start with? I just tried to fill up the heads CC.

Do a search on checking piston to valve clearance.

Any opinions on timing chains for this application. I got one of summits 2 piece covers and am going to use a comp cam nylon thrust button. Should I get a true roller, double roller ...... I currently have what appears to be the stock gears and a Reynolds chain, but not sure if it a roller or not.
