need help rough idle then fine turn off then rough again
is this a possible cts??? or something else
ok i have a 91 rs 305 tbi. i was washing my car last night and like always it was cool so i was spraying out the engine bay cleaning it all up. done this many times no problems what so ever. well i drove it and noticed it was driving kinda rough then it came out of it. well i tried starting my car and it was idling real real rough the smell of gas real bad and like a black smoke coming out of the exhaust. i rev it up and kinda work the gas through and its back to normal. its idling normal still kinda a gas smell but no smoke. i thought maybe distrib was wet but if it was it would run horrible and not go back to normal. i thought maybe a loose spark wire but same thing if it was that the car wouldnt return to normal. its almost like the car is running rich and then it comes out of it and runs and drives like a champ. but if u shut it off and then restart it its back to the same process.
im completely lost. im not exactly sure what it is. i know the plugs could use chaging along with wires and distrib. but those to me don;t even sound like the problem.... any ideas????

seriously no one has any idea????? i just don;t why it would act like its flooding out then work its way out of it... but when i shut the car off and then start it it does the same thing acting like its getting to much fuel but it works it way out again. its all stock besides the exhaust but i haven;t done any wtrenching on it to mess anything up so i think it is a sensor ort something but i dunno what sensor if any would cause this problem... just looked. took the air filter off and started it up while looking at the injectors. it seems like at start up they are sputtering and looks like its throwing in more gas then needed. but rev it up or let it sit for a few minutes it works its way out and the injectors thorw a continuos fine mist like they should. it does this every time i start it up.

Check all of your ignition components. Most likely cause is a loose plug wire or some other connection, especially on the side of the O2 sensor.
A new set of wires runs around $20. If yours are the originals they probably need to be changed anyway, along with the cap and rotor.

yea im gonna change plugs wires distrib and rotor and see what i come up with. i figured it was a loose plug wire too but i checked all of them and nothing.

still having the same problem and it kinda seems like its getting worse.

when u first start it up u can see that the injectors are throwing to much fuel in at the beginning. once its all burned off its like they return to the fine mist inside the tbi. the injectors don't look cracked and dont seem to be leaking. im thinking its a sensor but which one i have no clue

ok well the guy at autozone told me sunday that codes couldn;t be checked on an f body... i believed him for a awhile until i read on how to do it. anyways i checked the codes and all my sensors seem to come back good....... could it possibly be my plugs and wires are just finally going that bad???? im gonna change them anyways this weekend cause im sure they need it but would plugs wires distrib and rotor be causing all this trouble????

Yes it could be your plugs and wires. Plugs, wires, cap/rotor are normal wear items that should be replaced periodically anyway.
Re: need help rough idle then fine turn off then rough again
i understand this. im gonna change my plugs and wires and ect. i dunno if that is the problerm i have never seen such a thing such as this and i figured the problem would gradually get worse with the wear and not come on suddenly like it has

check your battery connection, same thing happened to me once and it turned out to be an old rusty battery connection. also if thats not it check your wires for arcing, also pull the cap off and check the rotor and the cap
Re: need help rough idle then fine turn off then rough again
well changed plugs changed rotor and cap and wires. still doing the same thing... the battery is newer and the connections are fine... im getting extremely pissed with this car. u start it its running rich. its acting like its flooding itself rev it up alittle bit and it runs fine. until the next time u start it up it repeats the same thing. even five seconds after u just had it on...it doesn;t matter.. please i donj;t really wanna drop anymore money into this car i;ve already done enough. someone out must know whats going on or experinaced this
Re: need help rough idle then fine turn off then rough again
ok so i got bored this morning and couldn;t sleep so i went to work on my car at 530 in the morning. checked all the vacum lines and they were good checked all the plug wires they are good. disconnected some sensors and plugged them back in. theres this one sensoir on the side of the throttle body that said tps which im assuming is the throttle position sensor. i took it off and it was freakin dirty. i cleaned up out and played with it alittle bit put the thing back on and now theres no problem with it whatsoever. starts right up no idle problems nothing. its running back to the way it was. anyone ever experiance this at all???? it seems like the tune up really did wonders on the car too. so hopefully the gas will save and burn better. im so excited that i finally figured it out.

You probably got dirt in the TPS or it's connections. You fixed it when you took it off and reinstalled it. I've seen a lot of parts issues get fixed that way. Part was never bad, but just the act of replacing it fixed the real problem, corrosion, dirt, bad connection, etc. Glad you got it figured out. Nothing worse than those problems that keep on after think youve done everything possible.

Glad you found it. It's possible the TPS was sticking and confusing the ecm into thnking the throttle was open more than it was. Odd though.
