CAR DIES WHEN DRIVING FOR A LONG PERIOD!

I have a 1988 TA with a 350 TPI. After driving the car for a long period. (Hwy and City) The car will stall out. I will start it right away, but it would idle for about 5 seconds and slowly drop in rpm and stall. When the car starts, and I press on the gas pedal, it doesn't rev, but it sounds like it is running out of gas, and then stalls out. If I leave the car off for about 1 1/2 - 2 hours it will start and drive fine without stalling. There are no engine codes showing.

I had the same problem, I replaced the IAC (Idle Air Control valve.) and the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor.) that fixed the problem. I dont know which was doing it but I suspect it was a little of both. Make sure you calibrate them.

Could be a problem with the EGR valve or EGR vacuum solenoid. I've had similar symptoms with the car running bad after it heated up due to this.

Re: CAR DIES WHEN DRIVING FOR A LONG PERIOD!

How do I calibrate the IAC motor? I replaced both of them last year, and I set the TPS sensor, but do I need to calibrate the IAC motor too?

Where is the EGR vacuum solenoid located?

Also, the car at cold start up will start and then stall. When I start it right up again it will stay running fine.
Thanks!

Re: CAR DIES WHEN DRIVING FOR A LONG PERIOD!

The EGR vacuum selenoid is right near the EGR valve. The cold start problem is strange and is making me think less that it is an EGR problem. Don't have a good answer though.

How old is the fuel pump?

Exact same thing happened to me and it was that. But I have the mechanical one up front so I'm not sure if the same thing would happen with yours. We could drive for hours, then it would start to sputter then die. Wait 15 mins, we were good for another hour at best. Changed the fuel pump and no more problems.

This was on our drive across Canada with it, it died on us in the mountains around the border of Alberta and Vancouver. Right in one of those covered tunnels, and a logging truck came flying up the hill behind us. I was able to pull over JUST far enough, and on an angle, to get out of his way and then I put it in neutral and coasted back out of the tunnel. Talk about a scare.

Anyway, hope you find the problem. Thought I'd offer the fuel pump issue cause it sounded exactly like our problem.

Sounds to me like a blocked gas tank vent. next time it happens loosen then retighten the cap, then try to restart. If this works it's your vapor canister or the lines/solenoids to it. Easy and free to check, worth a shot.

Re: CAR DIES WHEN DRIVING FOR A LONG PERIOD!

Is the vapor canister beside the air filter box on the passenger side. Where is the solenoid? On a hot day I've noticed a lot of pressure build up in the gas tank.
I took the car out for a drive last week and it died again. When I was trying to start it, I saw smoke coming from under the hood. The thin wire coming from the neg battery terminal caught on fire. (The one that gets grounded to the rad support.) I changed the wire, and the car still stalls out. But in a shorter period of time. This car is driving me crazy!
