Dies when first put into gear
Okay, first thing in the day when I start it up and put it into gear it's fine, but after little while into the day when I start it back up, it wants to try and die on me when I put it in gear. The idle falls to like 400-500 and then just drops o 0 and dies if I dont give it gas. If I can manage to give it enough gas to keep it above 1000 and get going for a minute or so, it will be fine at red lights and such, but after I turn it off and go to start it up again, same problem...
I'm pretty sure it's the spring on my carb, it's VERY loose and doesn't look like it's the right spring that should be on there. I think it's this, because no matter how high I set the idle, it still does it.
Anyone got any ideas?
Edit: This it the spring I'm reffering to...

Re: Dies when first put into gear
the spring is not the culprit, if it was then you would have a higher idle and it would be hard to drop back down.
have you given the car a tune up recently?
check for a vacuum leak as well, they can cause idle issues
that spring can be moved to a forward position, behind your ac compressor (if you have one) theres a bracket that it can be attached to and then the other end can go on the same connection as the throttle cable

Re: Dies when first put into gear
Vaccum leaks, that could be the problem. While my step-dad and I were messing around with my brakes, he said that a valve in the front of the carb was pulling more vaccuum than the one in the back (where the vaccum hose to the master cylinder usually is) and he swapped them out and plugged up the back... so if I swap them back to the way they were before, do you think it would fix the problem?
And my idle is sometimes very high. Sometimes when I start up the car, it won't even stay at 1000 RPM, but sometimes it will be right at like 1500 RPM.

did the problem start after he did that?
go back to the way it was and see if anything is not working correctly
a high idle on startup shows that your high idle cam is working on your carb

Come to think of it, yeah, it's gotten a little harder to start and has started doing that a little while after we did that... never thought that could be the problem though, I'll switch the lines back around and see what happens. Thanks.

Okay, swapped em out and so far so good. My brakes aren't soft anymore either, they stop better and I haven't had to fight the car to stay running when I start it up. I'll keep you posted if something else happens.
