Draining fuel line?

'89 RS apparently needs a fuel filter.
To drain line, manual says to remove the fuel pump fuse and
wait until engine quits.
About how long would you expect engine to run
before quitting?
Thanks!

On fuel injection, maybe a second. On a carb, maybe 10 or 15 seconds, depending on bowl volume.

Knowing something about what kind of car and engine you're dealing with would help.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. An 89 never came with a carb, with or without a mechanical fuel pump. We need him to tell us.

Re: Draining fuel line?

Certainly. Sorry about that.
'89 RS, 350 TBI.

I loosened the connections on the
fuel filter and it seems to be
syphoning gas from the tank.
Any ideas?

Moving this to Tech/General engine since it's not carbureted.

Re: Draining fuel line?

350 TBI? Ok, so this was originally a 305 TBI? Then you should have a fuel pump fuse somewhere in there. F/P 1 and F/P2 seem like good starting points, yank those and see if it'll stall.
You've only got, what, 14psi in the line anway? I wouldn't lose sleep over it...

Re: Draining fuel line?

Question really is this:
How can I change fuel filter without draining my
gastank in the process?
I loosened filter and it drained about a gallon before
I gave up, tightened it back up, now asking you guys...

Change the fuel filter when the tank is nearly empty.

Re: Draining fuel line?

if you had time to let a gallon spill out you probably couldve thrown the new on. as far as i know, it cant drain your whole tank because the lines run out of the top of the tank, so gravity will help you. like sonix said, tbi should have a fairly low pressure in the line anyways, and you seem to have already relieved the pressure.
