over revved my engine and.....
okay so the engine in my car is a little old its been sitting around for a few years same with the carb. i have it in park and i start revving the engine pretty decently to try to clear out some old carbon or anything. "it's in park" than i gusse i go a little crazey and floor it. the engine is going nuts and than i let go ofthe gass, the rpm wont go down! so its giving it 110% and no way to slow it down. my question is what happend, and what to do if this happens while im going down the highway and theres no way to stop safley.
my engine is a 305 v8

You may have a stuck throttle cable. You can turn off the engine with the key, and that should stop it.

LMAO WOW....check ur throttle return spring it might have came off of be old and worn out and not strong enough to close the throttle, also check all ur linkage going to the carb make sure nothing is hanging up...could be your TV Cable sticking....dont adjust it just manually operate the throttle arm from under the hood with the car off a few times and see whats hanging up...if it happens again here is a novel idea....turn off the ignition....

LMFAO
You were probably too freaked out to even think about taking the key out the ignition. This kind of stuff is funny when you look back and realize how one wasn't thinking strait. I know cause it's happened to me before, lol.

Same thing happened to my FI car last month, but it turned out the lower dash piece wasn't were it should have been (a shop had just fixed my floppy steering column & not put the lower piece back right) and it was hanging up on the pedal assembly.
Just a thought.

If it happens again, just remember not to freak out. If you stay cool, you'll have no trouble reacting correctly (in this case shutting off the ignition.)

Re: over revved my engine and.....
I had a similar problem when I started up my 89 Vette - the rpms went all the way up as soon as it fired. I shut it down right away, tried it again and the same thing happened. I had just finished washing and detailing the car and had gotten the plastic floor liner in front of the accelerator pedal instead of behind it. Oops.
