What Fuel Line Fittings Do I Need?
I have an 87 Formula with a 305, mechanical fuel pump and an Edelbrock Performer 600. I am replacing the fuel pump with a new one and want to replace the fuel line from the pump to the carb. I want to use steel braided hose (I've used it before, a long time ago). I got the fuel pump, it's just a $20 pump from AutoZone. It looks like the one in the picture below. But I'm not sure what fittings to get? I want to use a fitting like the one in the picture that goes between the pump and braided line, the blue and red piece. But I don't know which one to get. What size is the threading from the pump? Can anyone tell me what to use? When I go to Jegs there are a few like it but there are different sizes. Also what is 4AN? 6AN? 8AN? etc... Also would I use something else to connect to my carb? Or just use a hose clamp to clamp it onto the fitting that is already on the carb? One last thing... Isn't there already a filter in the edelbrock 600? Because I thought I heard someone once say if you unscrew the fuel inlet fitting on the back passenger side of the carb the filter is in there. If it is then I should not need another one inline right? Is the one in the carb good enough?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: What Fuel Line Fittings Do I Need?
Ok, i'm pretty sure the '87 will take the same fuel pump as my '82, so that fitting will need to be a 3/8" inverted flare, (male threads).
It'll be an adapter fitting to... lets say -6AN female. That's 3/8". Then buy the hose assembly and go to town. I'm not sure what that carb takes, but I think someone else here will know.

Thanks. So I use the FBM-2112 on the carb? And do I just use a hose clamp to keep the hose on?

Unscrew the stock hose barb from the carb and screw in the FBM-2112. That'll give you a -6 male fitting on the carb that you can screw a -6 female hose end onto.

how hard is it to intall the braided hose into the AN hose end fittings in order to get a leak free hose?

It's pretty trivial. There's almost no way you could have a leak.

Re: What Fuel Line Fittings Do I Need?
Awesome info guys. Thanks. I have never used AN fittings before, that's why I had all the questions. But I found some pictures of how it works, that's pretty impressive stuff. Anyway I called Summit and they recommended a kit for 39 bucks but it wasn't exactly what I wanted. But your info and theirs helped me figure out exactly what I needed (sizes). I ordered these parts individually from Jegs for $107 (total with handling)...
1x
Jegs Blue Fuel Inlet AN Fitting
Fits Edelbrock & Carter carbs
5/8"-20 fuel bowl thread
-6AN hose thread
Part Number # 555-100502
$4.99ea.
3x
Jegs -6AN Female to 3/8" Tube Fitting
Part Number # 555-100550
$7.99ea.
1x
Jegs 90° Max Flow Swivel Hose End
-6AN
Part Number # 555-100021
$14.49ea.
1x
Jegs Blue Straight Flare Fitting

Part Number # 555-100104
$4.49ea.
1x
Earl's In-Line Fuel Filter
-6AN male
Part Number # 361-230106
$29.99ea.
1x
Earl's Auto-Flex Steal Braided -40 to +300 degrees F Hose
AN Size: -06 (3/8''); 3' Foot Length
Part Number # 361-303006
$17.99ea.
The reasons I went this way instead of a kit...

The reasons I went this way instead of a kit...
- Money wasn't an issue, I just cannot stand to have leaks so when it comes to lines used for any type of liquid, especially cooling, I get extremely picky.
- Style/Looks.
- Ease of changing parts, that is why I went with AN rather than getting a fitting for the pump and a regular hose and 2 clamps.
- Because of number 3, I wanted to have an in-line filter that was simple and fast to change rather than using a filter inside the carb. I know the internal filter is easy too, but the air cleaner removal is just one extra step. Hey, it's hot here in the south, less time working on my car in this heat makes me happier

- Most of the kits suggested used banjo fittings for the carb inlet. I don't know the facts but it seems to me that a banjo fitting would have been more restrictive than something that flows straight into the inlet.
- Even if I had gotten a kit, then bought the extra two hose fittings and the in-line filter it would have cost me 2 bucks more than I spent. So, I came out ahead.

Re: What Fuel Line Fittings Do I Need?
Banjo fittings are recommended for some drop-base air cleaners where you might not have enough clearance for a straight hose connection.
The 3/8 fittings at AutoZone were probably too big because you were looking at 3/8 NPT pipe fittings. The stock pump isn't pipe thread, it's inverted-flare. The adapter you ordered is 1/4 NPT. You need an Aeroquip FBM-2108.

Ahh, so NPT is pipe thread? And it's not 3/8 or 1/4 but a 5/8-18 in. inverted thread?

One more thing, would this work?
JEGS 100541
http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/100541/10002/-1
I prefer to use Jegs for purchasing, they are fast, I have never had any problems with them and they cost less on most things. The opposite I've heard about Summit. And Jegs doesn't seem to have the Aeroquip FBM2108. But if the above adapter is the same thing then I'll get it.

Never mind that last question. I now understand what an inverted flare is. And the one from Jegs will work just fine.
Thanks for everyone's help.

Re: What Fuel Line Fittings Do I Need?
This ended up turning into two threads...
I'm all done with this thread. Thanks to everyone who helped. I went back to AutoZone and got the 20 dollar pump. If it goes bad faster than others would then at least it's cheap and easy to get. I got all the parts for my fuel line but had to exchange a few things, I got the wrong hose ends. I just put the swivel hose end on my hose, that was pretty easy, although I did nick up the red cap pretty good so it won't look perfect. I had to use vise grips and a rag between them and the cap, I don't have a vise or a work bench to put one on otherwise that would have been the best. I went to Doc's Performance Parts here in Chattanooga and easily got the fitting for the pump. I got an Aeroquip FCM2108 (-6 to 5/8-18 TH'D).
Oh, and even though I said I'm all done with the thread, I will post pics of the job when I'm done, probably will be next weekend by the time I get the new hose ends.

If you end up doing a lot of these things, you can buy anodized aluminum wrenches that won't mar the surface finish.

Re: What Fuel Line Fittings Do I Need?
I may do that since I was thinking of doing all the hoses I can in ss braid hose. Mainly for the looks and I hear it helps keep the heat in the hoses down and it gets pretty hot under the hood.

Re: What Fuel Line Fittings Do I Need?
It won't make any difference to the temperature in the hose. The biggest advantages are abrasion resistance and ease of disconnection/reconnection. I suppose appearance is an advantage, but it can be overdone.

Re: What Fuel Line Fittings Do I Need?
True, it could be overdone. Like if you did it to all of the fluid hoses AND vacuum. I just plan on doing all the fluid hoses, if I can afford it. Right now it's the last thing on my list though. I am getting the rear end rebuilt in a couple weeks and getting the rest of the interior parts. Then one month later the body work and I'll be done, enough, at that point. Anything I do after that will be as it breaks or if I have extra cash to throw around.
