Horrible Acceleration

Hey all. I really need some help with my '91 Camaro RS, V6. Here's whats been going on: When I accelerate, there is a HUGE delay in acceleration. I practically have the pedal to the floor and it just does NOT want to go. I'd say it accelerates about 8 seconds later after I've pushed the pedal down. When I'm driving, it runs real ragged.

What's also strange is that it does this whether the engine is hot OR cold and when the car is idling and not driving, it sounds ok. Not only this, the RPM gauge is reading 3000 at idle and it used to idle at 1000. My car refuses to idle any lower than 3000 RPMS.

My dad and me have replaced the spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel filter, and made sure the air pump was alright and that was fine, the ECM was checked and is also ok, no vacuum leaks are present either. The distributor cap and rotor were also replaced. We are so frustrated because we just don't know what's wrong!

We thought the ECM might be an intermitten problem. We actually took this module to Advanced Auto Parts, they tested it, and said it was working fine. AHH! Does anyone know what the problem might be?? Thanks.

Re: Horrible Acceleration

Let me be the first to say "welcome to the boards". But on to your car, are you getting any codes? Are all your sensors good?(O2, MAP, EGR, etc) Those are good places to start before you go spending alot of money.

Re: Horrible Acceleration

No codes were displaying and the fuel pressure is fine. I went and checked the sensors and you were right! The ESC connector had completely fallen off the car. How silly is that? Thanks so much for your help...my car is running perfect now!

Pics!

Yeah! Actually I do! It needs a new paint job though. My grandma owned this car before me and got a new paint job for it 5 years ago, but the guys who painted it did a terrible job. They used enamel on the front end portion of the car and they used a cheap clearcoat. End result? The Florida sun here ate it to pieces! It was fine when I had it for a while, but the sun is just too intense. I would wax and polish that thing every 4 months but it really doesn't help when your clearcoat won't hold up!

The pics here are the current ones. When I go to get it painted, I want to keep the same color, but add two white stripes on the hood and a stripe on each side of the car. I thought about getting a 2" cowl induction hood for the future when I replace the eingine, but I'm not sure yet. I'll tell you one thing, I am NEVER getting rid of that car! And I can't WAIT for the new 2009 Camaro!

Re: Pics!

Thats a beautiful car you got there I love the 91-92 style ground fx, paint doesnt matter atleast its one color, if you look at my cardomain my Sport Coupe is black and blue. I will never get rid of my Sport Coupe. I would love to save some money for an 09 Camaro RS with the 304 hp 3.6L V6 and the 6 speed automatic

Re: Pics!

Yeah, I baby my car. I see that you've done a lot of work to the camaros that you have! Keep it up, those cars are looking great!

YES! The V6 3.6L! I was reading the specs of the V6 compared to the V8 and the V6 is actually a better car for the money. Well, in my opinion, lol.

Yup, the Camaro I have is in excellent shape. But it's giving me a problem again. I thought the acceleration lag was fixed but now it's doing the same thing all over again. Grr! Maybe if I check all the sensors again or somethin'.

Re: Horrible Acceleration

sorry to hear of your troubles!! heres my two cents... running into a similar problem but with a diffrent car id check both your coil and your egr valve. also double check your timing. my problem and which caused more of that problem i wish i knew. but in doing a lot of research i have found like you read in another post if you are to have something tested at an auto parts store have it tested more than once like 10 would be good or whatever you can get away with asking for, the better and tell them why . a part can work perfect when its cold and like crap when it heats up. i had a coil go bad on me that caused stalling which was not fun and it tested fine but once i drove the vehicle around and it heated up and had a friend test it i found the culprit. no stalling anymore. good luck

Re: Horrible Acceleration

The ESC (Electronic Spark Control) was made to retard spark timing to reduce spark knock in the engine. The ESC is also known as a "knock" sensor. It works with the ECM (Electronic Control Module) to retard the spark timing in the distributor. As where it's located, it's on the passenger side of the engine block on the bottom, next to the starter, next to the single wire plug. Hope this helps!

I'm still having trouble with my car, too. It's still running poorly and I have no idea why. I guess it's time to check everything again! :P
