No you don't need new parts if you use an OE-style cam.

Re: can I use a hyd cam in a roller block
so it does not have to be a roller cam?
thanks...I was puzzled because in the catalog Im looking at from elgin industries has a different section for roller cams and it references using the stock thrust plate only for the roller cams...Im confused as always.
Thanks for any help

Re: can I use a hyd cam in a roller block
There are two types of roller cams... original-equipment-roller-type and retrofit-roller type.
Original-equipment-roller-type cams must be used in factory-roller blocks with the original-equipment-type retainer plate and matching timing set. They can't be used in non-roller blocks.
Retrofit-roller cams can be used in any block, provided that they're used with the old-style non-roller timing set and a thrust button or thrust bearing.

if you are asking if you can run a hydraulic flat tappet cam in a roller block, the answer is yes. GM actually did that with some of the late 80's, early 90's truck blocks.

Boy, what a mess... ok, 4 types of cams:
hydraulic flat tappet
solid flat tappet
hydraulic roller
solid roller
Notice how there are TWO hydraulic cams? Ok, now that we're clear on that.. You have a hydraulic ROLLER cam factory in that block (or it should). Do you want to run a hydraulic FLAT TAPPET ? Key words here are roller or FLAT TAPPET. They're all hydraulic. Solids are more of a race only style of part, not the everyday norm sorta thing.
If you want to downgrade to a flat tappet, you need matching lifters and pushrods, but yes you can do it. I'd recommend you stick with roller stuff though....

Re: can I use a hyd cam in a roller block
Hey SONIX thanks for the clarification...I think I am going to use roller cam and lifters to avoid having to take it apart again if something doesnt fit right or seems right but isnt if you know what i mean....Reinventing the wheel is something Im not up for and taking it apart again isnt high on my list of weekend activities....thanks again everyone.

If one converted would you have to get different length tappet pushrods then on a engine taht was a tappet engine stock? Thanks for the wisdom.

Re: can I use a hyd cam in a roller block
They're all "tappet engines"... a tappet is a lifter.
If you change between factory roller, retro roller or flat, the pushrod length will change.

I think he was asking if he could use roller tappets on a flat tappet cam,
that's a HUGE no no. Sonic got it.
I would NEVER move from roller to flat tappet.
Metal, Yes.
