Cam Concerns.
Cam Concerns.
Hey guys, looking for a little assistance. Came over here since, as much as I love my home forum, getting performance answers is like pulling teeth
Kinda long, but bear with me.
Ok, so the application is actually a 93 Chevy C1500. Single cab/step side. She's 2WD with a TH400. I recently yanked the V6 and am in the process of having a 355 built for it.
Im using a Vortec 350 out of a 96 Sierra to start with. I picked up a factory rebuild kit with Speed Pro pistions, PC rings, Clevite bearings, Felpro gaskets, Cloyes timing, Melling pump, etc. Running an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and a Holley 4160 600CFM carb.
I talked to the performance shop (half mile away, how convenient) and he would like to do 2.02/1.60 valves in the heads (L31 Vortec) and then my choice of cam, springs, etc. I think he is going to use his valves (stainless Ferrera valves). He is actually going to handle the engine start to finish and dyno tune if I wish.
ANYWAYS, I have a factory ZZ4 cam that was sold to me with the engine. Ive heard good and bad about it. I dont really want anymore lift than it has due to the head clearances, etc. If I decided to go with something other than that I was looking at:
Comp Cams 08-411-8:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...8&autoview=sku
And Comps recommended locks, retainers, springs.
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

That cam has less exhaust lift so Im figuring it would be easier to make it work with the heads. Comp site says good mid and 323-373 gears.
Also, should I go ahead and have him throw in some ARP rocker studs while Im in there? Also, will the factory rockers be fine? I already bought Comp Push rods with my rebuild kit.
Im hoping to keep this overall not too costly, and hopefully settle on some sort of combo as the only reason machine work hasnt started is I dont have a definetey valve train and cam setup picked out.
Thanks.

Its not 100% accurate, but it will give you an idea as to which cam will do best with your set up. It also doesent take into account accessory losses and drivetrain losses I dont think.

Well if you already have the ZZ4 cam, I say go with it.
If youre not sure, send comp cams an email. They are very helpful and will help you pick out a new cam and tell you how it compares to the ZZ4 cam. You can decide if the differences are worth spending the money for a comp cams.

Re: Cam Concerns.
I see that according to Summit, the ZZ4 cam has just a little more duration, and while the intake lift is the same, the exhaust lift is higher at .501 vs .474. Not sure what sort of difference that equates out to, but other than that they seem to be pretty similar or paper.
