Freshening up my 305.

Hey Guys,

Winter is approaching here in PA so the Camaro will be taking a nap for a few months. I was thinking about getting the 305 bored out. I was told this will freshen up the car by smoothing the cylinder walls. The car has ''93,xxx miles on it. I put 1,000 miles on it in 2 years so I don''t beat on it much. I would like the engine to be running as good as it can for Summer DD/Twisty Car. (PA Mountains Are Fun )

I know I can put a 350 in my Z28 and that''s what I plan on doing, but this 305 is still young in my opinion and I don''t wanna scrap it. I want to put this engine in a Manual 5 Camaro down the road and keep the Z28 for a weekend car.

I was told I should get my engine bored .030 over and that engine will actually be a 310cid. I''m not looking for much power since the Z28 will be the ''''Go Fast'''' Camaro. But will I make any extra hp/tq from getting the engine bored out? (I know nothing about boring/honing, etc.)

By the way, it''s a 305 TPI so will I need to tune the car to accommodate the extra cubes?

Thanks

Boring it won't make any noticeable difference. Unless you need to correct an actual problem, don't bother.

With 93k miles and regular maintenance, that engine should be in fine shape. The valve stem seals are about all that would be expected to be less than fully functional.

You're really looking at upgrades - exhaust, cam, TPI runners, etc. - if you want it to run better.

Re: Freshening up my 305.

Well it has 93k miles, but 6 owners and an R-Title to boot. I was looking at more inside engine work because the current mods will go on the L98 and I'll have a stock 305 then.

A16 year old car should not retain it's factory hp ratings from 1992, or am I wrong?

A well-maintained engine will be making similar numbers as it did when new.

Sounds great, Just keep it clean, and use a good machine shop. I have been seeing alot of poor work comming from machine shops. Alot of it looks good to the eye but when checked it does not fly. A bore has to be followed by a good machine hone not a hand job. A local shop has been building 305's for a round track over in Georgia for years and they make good power with out trick parts.

What exactly is a bore and what is a hone?

Re: Freshening up my 305.

Boring is a cutting operation that removes a lot of material from the walls to correct geometry defects.

Honing is more of a grinding operation done on bores of the correct geometry to determine the exact final size after boring and to create the proper surface finish to retain oil to lubricate the rings. It's always done after boring, but may be done sometimes without boring during a rebuild to prepare the walls for new rings.

Re: Freshening up my 305.

What I have been seing latley is blocks bored to final size then a hand hone run through the bore. The engine is then stuck together. The bore will look good but the bore size will be everywhrere, and out of round as hell.
