engine rebuild problems
I bought an 87 firebird for $500 it has a v6 right now with a rod nock... i have a small block 350 that i am going to put in the car. i bought a rebuild kit for the engine and when i started to put it back together the pistons just wouldnt go in right. they go into the cylinder but it takes too much force to get them in... so i just took the piston back out and started looking for problems... i checked the rings and they are the right size, the pistons are clean, they are stock rings, there isnt much wear in the cylinder i removed the ridge at the top of the cylinder and honed them... just for the hell of it i put the piston in with only the compression rings and it was fine but then i tried only the oil rings and then i hit the same problem... if anyone has any ideas it would really help.... thanks

Take the rings off of the piston. Put one of the oil control rings into the bore an inch or so, then square it in the bore by putting the piston in the cylinder upside down and push the ring down a little. Measure the gap in the ring with a feeler gauge. Repeat for the other oil control ring (only one ring in the bore at a time) and compression rings.
Are you absolutely sure you had the oil control expander in the groove and under the rings properly?
