Speedometer cable?

So I have this problem, whenever it's cold outside, and I get in my car and get ready to drive it, once I hit around 15mph, I hear a whining noise coming from my car, and my speedometer goes up even when I'm not going faster. This ONLY happens when it's cold. I have no idea what it is, or how to fix it, and if you know it'd be awesome.

Welcome to TGO. Adding your car details, such as year, make, model, is helpful. If your car is an 85-89 IROC, the speedo will be cable driven. If that's the case, the cable probably requires cleaning and lubing.

Yes, it's a 1987 IROC-Z, Carbed and Automatic. Bone stock, no mods.
If anyone can tell me if driving with the cable disconnected cand damage anything, that would be great too!!

If you unhook it at the trans, there'll be a fluid leak. The best bet is at the cluster.

Also the vehicle speed sensor is on the back of the cluster so the computer won't be able to properly control the fuel mixture, thottle kicker, or the transmission converter lockup with the speedometer unhooked.

It sounds to me like a dry speedometer cable or head unit.

Re: Speedometer cable?

Thanks for the responses, really helpful.
My family has three vehicles, which two don't work, and one won't pass inspection.
I really need my car too! Lol.
