Pushrod length?
Pushrod length?
Hey everyone - I'm trying to figure out what my pushrod length should be. I am doing an engine buildup from scratch. I know that there is a process for checking it with special tools, but I don't think that's necessary, as I'm doing a pretty stock setup. Here's what I have:
'89 350 Chevy truck block (not decked)
GMPP Chevy Vortec heads
GMPP Self-aligning rocker arms
Summit hydraulic lifters
GMPP standard head gaskets
Comp Cams 242-2 Extreme Energy Flat-tappet cam
The rotating assembly is a 383 Eagle setup.
All of this work is already done (heads installed, etc..) except for my pushrods. Still trying to figure out what length to get. I'd like to find the Summit brand part number for this setup.
HELP?!?!?!?

Re: Pushrod length?
Flat tappet cam - 7.8" is the stock length. Roller lifters use 7.2" length.
You are using a non stock cam, with non stock rockers, and non stock heads, so I doubt stock pushrods will be "perfect".
The only tool you need for this is a $12 pushrod length checking tool that will work in the 7.8" range.
I'd buy it and find out. You can buy it locally, unless you live wayyyyy out in the stix.

Re: Pushrod length?
Lots of things will change the geometry and cause the need for custom length pushrods. Aftermarket valves, different valve job, thicker or thinner head gaskets, different heads, different rockers, milled heads etc. I agree, get the tool and check it out. IME stockers have always been way too long.
