HSR, MiniRam, AFRs, T56, brakes, suspension, interior work, gauges, wheels...
What are you wanting out of the car? Street sleeper, drag queen, autocross, mild stock, show, there are several different ways you can use the money. It just depends on what direction you're going.

It would also be helpful if you stated what you have now.

1. Full exhaust
2. 4th gen interior (recovered)
3. Save up a lil more and get some nice paint (assuming you have stock paint or something like that)
Like everyone said, u needa tell us what you're going for.
Some people will go all engine and have seats falling apart and no radio, Some people will have 200 pounds worth of stereo equipment, all custom interior and an engine thats on its last leg.

Since the post is here in general engine, rather than in interior or exhaust, I'll say to get a pair of good aluminum heads. 180cc for a 350, 195cc for a 383, now or soon. Most aftermarket 180s can be sent back to their manufacturer and enlarged to 195s for a reasonable cost.

2.02" intake valves don't fit a 305, so for that budget, I'd do a 350 short block with dished pistons. That budget rules out most of the better choices of forged pistons, or doing a 383.
Your alternative is a complete nitrous setup, buth gauges, bottle heater, remote bottle valve, and a Jacobs Nitrous Mastermind. I like it because it'll progressively add nitrous and fuel while progressively pulling timing.
say you set it for a 200 HP hit at 5000 rpm. This seems like too much, and unless you have a full exhaust system upgrade, it probably is, but back to my supposing. Well, you use this jacobs thing, you can set it for 50% increase at say 2500 rpm. And a 100 horse hit is fine for most stock 305s. Then at 3750 rpm you'd be getting 150 horses, which is still realistic. Some might say pushing your luck, but I feel otherwise. Anyway, by 3750 rpm, your 305 is already past it's torque peak, and as you rev higher, your non-nitrous peak-cylinder-pressures are dropping.
This is about as serious as you could get with a stock-bottom-end 305, and you don't want to start any nitrous below 2500 rpm. Some will say 3000, but they're using 125 horse hits with no progressive controller.
And doing this nitrous setup has 2 other advantages. One, you can remove the bottle if anyone else is gonna drive your car, and 2, you can still use it when you get a 350 or whatever.

Re: saved up 1200$..what to mod?
I wouldn't even waste money on a 305, save up and do the motor right with a forged 350 short block or even a 383. 400hp aint gonna do you any good if you can't plant the power, so start working on the suspension and brakes first. Trust me, torquey 383 + stock suspension = no fun. spinning tires is fun, but only when it's on PURPOSE! lol
