I swapped out my 305 to a 350. Before putting in the 350 I put in a cam xe268h and swapped it from tbi to carb. When trying to start the car it doesn't wanna start. I thought i had timing right but it seems like i did something wrong. It either backfires back up the carb or does a gunshot through the exhaust. I tried to readjust the valves but maybe i'm doinng those wrong too.


so any ideas? how could i make sure if timing or valves are right? could i be overlooking something?

 

it is very likely you have the timing 180 degrees off, quite easy to do and will cause these symptoms.
The motor come to TDC twice, and you probably have it set to the exhaust stroke as opposed to the intake stroke

Check that first.

 

Make sure you have the distributer rotation correct to.

 

distriputor rotation? how can you put it in any other way?

 

this is what i kinda figured. i just re did the timing.The engine kicking over almost starts but then stalls right away. i'm way off my timing?

 

The distributer could be installed wrong like mentioned above of the wire could be on the cap wrong. The distributer spins clockwise but if the wires were put on backwards it would not run either.

 

hmm i didn't think about that. i'll double check it.

 

it wasn't the wires. It was 180 off timing and the rockers were tightened too tight.
