Oil Leak Driver Side Header / Above oil filter

I have a oil leak that is running down from the back of my header/engine somewhere. It is running down above the oil filter. It runs down and drips off my tranny pan in the front. Anyone know what it is. I will get pictures tomorrow.

Distributor seal or rear china wall would be my guess.

Re: Oil Leak Driver Side Header / Above oil filter

check the oil press. sensor . it's above the oil filter . when re-sealing/replaceing be careful of old brittle plastic elect. connector . good luck .

Re: Oil Leak Driver Side Header / Above oil filter

It looks like it is coming from the distributer area. How hard is it to fix. And what is the rear china wall? It isn't coming from the sensor. I know that for sure.

China wall is where the intake manifold and engine block mate together; the area that runs across from each cylinder bank at both ends of the block.

If it's not coming from the intake manifold or the sensor, it's either coming from the distributor seal (it's a flat gasket) or the valve cover.

How hard is it to fix the distributor leak?

Remove distributor and reinstall with new gasket. Clean it off good and make sure its not the intake gaskets leaking. The area between the heads where the intake meets the block is prone to leakage. There are these crappy end seals that come with intake gaskets that always leak. We usually throw these away and put a nice bead of RTV on it.

Re: Oil Leak Driver Side Header / Above oil filter

Distributor hole has little or no oil presence. Most likely there is a full oil pressure tap next to the dizzy on the back of china wall that is leaky. As others have pointed out china wall intake manifold gaskets are prone to leak. When I re-install intakes I drill 3/16 holes into china wall every couple of inches for RTV to grab to. Instead of end gaskets I use ~5/16" bead of black RTV on the china walls. Give 24 hours for RTV to fully cure itself before putting engine back into operation.

I cant figure out how to take out the distributer... I have searched but cant find anything. Do I have to mark anything or what? I have the dizzy cap off but I cant figure how to get the rest of it off.

Re: Oil Leak Driver Side Header / Above oil filter

There's a bolt down by the base of the distributor, attached to the intake. It's the hold down clamp bolt. Dizzy isn't going anywhere until you remove that. Would be wise to index the rotor so you know where it's pointed when you reinstall so you can maintain correct firing order. Once you've done those 2 things, dizzy should lift right out.

That bold is going to be a pain to get to. And this is why I hate this damn Super Ram. It gets in the way of everything.
Edit: I can't even see the bolt.

Are you sure its leaking out of the distributor? Take some brake clean and hose it all off and clean it all. Nice and clean. Run it, drive it, see if thats where its leaking at or not.

OFF TOPIC:

I feel your pain. Try replacing a crank angle sensor on a V6 W-Body. It has to be done via Braille method. Even with the engine rotated over.

Can you feel the bolt? A universal socket, a long extension and a ratchet might help getting to the hold down bolt. Feel for the bolt with one hand and manupulate the ratchet with the other.

Okay, distributer is out. Where is the gasket supposed to go?

If it isn't that, what is this oil port you are talking about?

Re: Oil Leak Driver Side Header / Above oil filter

On the distributor, there's the collar that rests on the intake. Slide the distributor seal over the bottom of the dizzy and up against the collar. The seal gears sandwhiched between the collar and the intake manifold.

As for the oil port you're looking for: http://www.transamws6.com/pics/transam/piston02.jpg

See the right angle NPT fitting on the rear china wall? That's what you're looking for (you might not have the fitting, but that's the ports location)

Re: Oil Leak Driver Side Header / Above oil filter

Okay, not seal on the distributer, but I don't think it was really leaking.

I will check the port. I need to get my car going as I get my license back on Tuesday. Tomorrow, I am going to check the port and glob RTV on the China Wall, and get the gaskets for the dizzy. Then I have a Sac GTG on the 11th I plan on going to.
