Grinding noise identification
first post to the boards,
hi everyone.
I own a 1984 z28 (auto with 5L - non/ho)
Family owned since it rolled off the lot,
It was stolen about 3 years back,
and was garage kept since then...
I recently got it running again,
new everything minus a rebuild,
but heres to my question,
when it was stolen they used a screw driver to turn it over,
and now when i turn the key to on,
it makes a ticking noise like the starter is trying to turn over,
is the ticking normal or no?
(when i turn the car over, the starter works, only when in the ON position it makes the ticking that i can hear)
also when i get on the gas,
in first gear aboce 2.5 rpms it makes a grinding kinda noise until it shifts
but shifts clean,
goes through all the gears...
could it be the starter engaging when i get on it?
or is it a tranny problem?
all help is much appreciating.

Re: Grinding noise identification
im guessing the ignition where you put the key in.
but again, im not sure.
it may have messed up something in the steering column,
because for a while i had to use the tilt wheel and move the wheel up and down til it would turn over...
but then i found the sweet spot and i dont have to move the wheel now.

Re: Grinding noise identification
they probably stole the car to beat it like a red headed step child
get more indepth in the grinding noise and try to narrow it down

Re: Grinding noise identification
If the steering column was damaged when they stole it, I'd first look at the ignition swich which is located down near the bottom of the column.

Re: Grinding noise identification
Does the starter engage wile the key is in the run position before turning the key all the way to the start position? Or is the starter just staying engaged when the key returns to the run position after starting it?
If it is the first situation then there is something messed up with the wiring, steering column, or ignition switch.
If it is the second situation then more then likely the starter solenoid is just not disengaging. Could still be something with the ignition switch or steering column though.

Re: Grinding noise identification
replaced the starter .... it only makes the ticking when in the on position, and fully turns over when turned to start position... when turned off = no noise. all i hear is a ticking so i assume its the starter trying to turn, but not getting quite enough juice to do the job until you turn it all the way over.

Only when the key is turned to the START position do things happen at the starter. 1) The solenoid gets power and pulls the starter drive gear to the flywheel, 2) The solenoid moves a contact within that completes the circuit from the battery to the starter motor and the starter motor spins.
If the clicking you hear is indeed coming from the starter when the key is in the ON position, then this is not right. My thinking is when your car was stolen, the thieves buggered the ignition switch.
BTW, when in the ON position and the engine OFF, do you hear constant clicking or ?

Re: Grinding noise identification
The ticking you hear when the key is in the ON position is the mixture control solenoid in the carburetor. Its always ticking, you just can hear it well when the engine is running.

Re: Grinding noise identification
1) when car is off and key is out, no ticking noise.
only when power is on and car is not running can i hear the tick**
2)I guess they jacked up the column pretty bad,
i called my grandma to confirm what had happened.
3)Could it be the starter engaging when i am full throttle to cause the grinding?
4) heading out today to get the parts for the column to maybe solve the ticking and hopefully the grinding all at once...

Re: Grinding noise identification
new info as for the grinding noise,
sounds like a screwdriver scrapering metal,
but really fast,
coming from just behind the engine,
i can feel it really well with my pedal foot.

Re: Grinding noise identification
Check the torque converter cover "its a black plastic bell looking thing that keeps the dirt outa the TC and starter.
Make sure its in good shape and not cracked and getting ground upon by the TC.
Maybe some TC bolts have come loose.
A sound clip or video with sound could help out a lot in this diagnosis.

Re: Grinding noise identification
well,
to get a sound clip of the noise,
id have to be in gear and driving,
i will see if my brother can help me with that...
i got rid of the ticking by replacing the ignition in the column,
but still makes a bad scraping noise,
ill check the TC cover today and get back to you all.
