Powermax 2032
Can I install the crane cams powermax 2032 to a stock l98 without changing anything? I would be keeping stock heads, valves, valve springs, rockers etc. Thanks in advance for your help!

You "can", but you really should at least change the valve springs. Springs and retainers would be even better.

these are the springs that crane recommend when i used to run that 2032 on my heads..... comes with springs and retainers. these will work with stock heads and no machining is required...... much stronger than stock springs... and a 100 dollars thats not a bad deal at all.... thats pretty much all you need to run that cam... they recommend using a adjustable fuel regulator with this cam.. they claim that it will lean out the pistons or whatever.. so i bought the 60 afpr and bumped up the pressure....

hears what it sounded like in my car.... of course i have a ton of supporting mods when i ran the 2032 cam... a nice set of longtubes, y pipe and catback makes this cam very noticeable at idle...

Re: Powermax 2032
Thanks man , sounds mean ! So then I guess it means I have to take the heads off if I want to change the springs and retainers ?

Re: Powermax 2032
Heads don't have to come off to change springs. With the piston at TDC compression, just shove some nylon rope through the spark plug hole to pin the valves closed. Or use compressed air.

Re: Powermax 2032
cool.. another question though, not to sound stupid, but what would happen if I did run stock springs ? Could they handle the cam or would i run into problems? Appreciate the help.

Re: Powermax 2032
Stock springs are garbage, at best. Extremely weak, and would not be able to adequately control the valve at upper RPM's.

Re: Powermax 2032
I'd say most likely stock springs would get valve float and possibly knock a valve with a piston. For the money and how easy it is, just go for new springs.

Re: Powermax 2032
yea i wouldnt trust 20 year old springs.... i would pay the extra 100 to assure nothing will happen... just a little insurance on your part... besides, that cam is the biggest you can go without doing machine work to heads or manditory computer work... the lift of that cam is about all the heads can take before running into trouble... so dont run 1.6 rockers with it...

Re: Powermax 2032
Your car sounds mean 88fastgta,what other mods do you have besides the headers and exhaust? My wife got me the same cam and hooker shorties for valentines day. I have a HSR w/afpr, tpi airfoil, underdrive pullies. hooker cat back, ebay intake and a jet stage2 chip(not currently in), hoping for the same mean sound.

A lot of mods, but the 1 that really caught my eye was the heated O2. Whats the benefit and what O2 did you use and how is it wired? I hope my GTA sounds half that nasty.

Re: Powermax 2032
There's no "correct" in the sense that anything else would be "incorrect". It's a pretty forgiving application with a wide variety of choices that meet the needs.
Practically any entry-level "performance" springs will work. The old "Z28" springs, Comp 981, the ones Crane suggest for that cam, Howards, etc. One of the best options nowadays is the LS6 springs and the Comp "adapter" retainers 787.

Re: Powermax 2032
Stock springs do not "match" ANY cam. Not really even stock ones. They're the bare absolute minimum to get through the warranty period. Anything beyond that, is gravy.
By all means check all those out, there are others as well. I cannot emphasize strongly enough that in 2021 the LS6 ones are likely to be the best choice. After all, in the last ... however many years since the small block Chevy was introduced, in 1955 ... we've learned a thing or 2, as a species, about how to do this better.
Take advantage of the learning. Not that it's "necessary", or any such; just, take advantage.
