Make sure your choke heater wire is still on the choke thermostat.

Re: 1500 rpm idle?

it was a little loose so i put it on securly.. thanks for that info, now it just idles badly after it warms up like in the rpm gauge you can see it idle up, down, up, down and its around 500 rpms. like it wont stay stable. when i move the throttle the engine seems to rev good (i have no idea how good the distributor is on the car i pulled it from the junk yard cuz my old distributors pick-up coil went out) but the ignition coil is new (replaced it like 5 months ago).

Re: 1500 rpm idle?

If I understand right, you say its hovering around 500rpm, and bouncing around that 500rpm mark? If thats what its doing, bump the idle speed screw up untill its around 800rpm in P or N. Its prossible the idle speed was just way too low, which will make it bounce around and run like crap.

Also, check to make sure all the plugs are tight, and that both ends of the plug wires are snapped on completely and fitting tight to the terminals/plugs. A loose or burned plug wire can also make it run like that. Check this first, before you go playing with the carb adjustments.

Re: 1500 rpm idle?

checked all the wires and just put new plugs in today nice and tight, the idle air screw is kinda of low so i raised it from the bottom 5 complete turns, i replaced the coolant temp sensor and that code went away, and the only code i get is 44 lean oxygen sensor.

the car runs but has no power as i hit the petal. and takes along time while holding the petal down to gain speed. it drives really slow? is it driving this was cuz of the oxygen sensor?

Re: 1500 rpm idle?

so i replaced the oxygen sensor and it got a little better, basiclly all its doing now is when i drive the car it picks up speed slow, if i accelerate more it will like chug back a few times and pick up more speed. if i floor it itll kick into gear and bone out! but its still lidleing rough and chuggy. anyone think i should get a new distributor? their are no vaccum leaks just checked everything with some carb cleaner.

Re: 1500 rpm idle?

Emmissions could be the problem, my car is idling at around 1500.

Re: 1500 rpm idle?

If your car has the L69 (4bbl Qjet 305) like mine than it would have the emmissions where they put on an air pump with a v belt that runs air into the exhaust. If theres any problem with the hoses to that or if they were taken off it will make the car run like sh*t, reason mine isn't liking me much lately.

Re: 1500 rpm idle?

Found out that I don't have the L69, but the same principle applies.
