old cam fail.. need new cam

I was running a xe268h comp cam in my firebird and an msd streetfire dist. 2 days ago at start up my timing chain broke so i pulled it out and couldnt figure out why but the crank tuned easy but not the cam so i pulled the cam and the dist drive gear was trashed and it ruined the dist gear.. comp said they have had this problem extremely rarely with their xe lines (dunno why i didnt ask) and said they would replace with the same cam or any other of my choice and they will pay for the new dist gear.. i wanted to know for my set up would it be better to go with another xe268h or try their magnum series 270h

my heads:
210cc runner 64cc chambers
carb: demon 750
rockers: steel full roller 1.6
Holley contender intake

Re: old cam fail.. need new cam

The smaller 170's, a little extra cu, and a 2800 converter help to offset any perceived loss of lower rpm performance. The throttle is crisp and she jumps right into my usual commute mode of 24-3500 rpm. Mid range is strong up to 5K. Above there.. I'm usually not going anyway.

By the parts of your sig, you're built more for speed and performance? The 280h might be something to consider but, so might the next step up from it. I'd suggest calling Comp and get their input and then add a grain of salt and pepper up before you decide on your combination.

Good luck

Re: old cam fail.. need new cam

yeah i did talk to comp and they told me the magnum 180 would be a great choice for street/strip (witch is what my car is built for) but being i also daily drive it power brakes would need a canister... i never had a problem with the xe268 and power brakes... being i like being able to stop i think ill stay with the xe lines but go to the bigger xe284h has anyone had any good experiance with this cam?

btw wade thnx for the info

Re: old cam fail.. need new cam

Have you done any compression ratio calculations to see which cam is most suited to your setup?

Re: old cam fail.. need new cam

My XE274 has been in my 350 for a couple years an I haven't had a problem with it... but I had a brand new distributor gear (new dissy) and new timing chain when I put the cam in too. I don't know if you did that or not?
