flippen summit ignition box

ok i just bought a new summit street and strip ignition box. i start the car and have my gf run it threw rpm levels, and the car stalls. after pissn moaning and gronning i noticed that the ignition box is shutting off when ever it wants. the led will blink, then go solid, and shut off, taking car down with it. anybody know what causes that? i checked wires and everything. i called summit and they said its a bad box. anybody gimme any insite?

Re: flippen summit ignition box

talked to summit they said that it can either be a bad pickup coil or im getting an interference from my power wires touching the magnetic pickup wires. that true? anybody have that problem?

Re: flippen summit ignition box

a voltage surge could be the problem too. Have you checked your voltage regulator? It (the box) could be shutting down because of overload on the internals. could be over loading the chips or capacitors inside.

Re: flippen summit ignition box

yeah, if you are getting a miss at any RPM's check your points and see if they are out of wack. are you running a carb or throttle body?

Re: flippen summit ignition box

well, I'm running out of ideas. hmmmmm, try checking all your spark plugs' gap & check and see if you have a voltage leak from one of your plug wires. I do know that between 2000 and 3500 RPM is when your ignition produces it peak voltage. it could be a leak to the block or some other peice of grounded metal. Idk.

Re: flippen summit ignition box

Well im not really familiar with the summit ignition box but if your desperate whet the heck ill take a stab at it lol. Can you describe this miss alittle better? Does it happen under load at any other lower RPM? Is it rhythmic or more random like a stumble? One thing ide check is to see if the ignition wires are routed too close together. The can induce a missfire in nearby plug wires.

Re: flippen summit ignition box

its more like a hesitaion miss then anything. i have a plug wire resting on a valve cover, would that do anything> all my wires are seperated by the wire seperator things... it only misses when reeving it at 2500 rpm. lower and idle has none.

Re: flippen summit ignition box

Not likely resting agains the valve cover would do anything. I wonder about the spark advance though. Try this with the car running take a dial back timing light if you have one and measure your base ignition timing as well as the timing with advance at higher RPMs. I wonder if its just being advanced too far or just not far enough.

Re: flippen summit ignition box

Yea timing can cause a whole lot of issues. I like to set my timing at about 12 degrees. Its one of thoes things it varys from car to car everyones got a different oppinion on the matter but ide start at like 12 degrees and adjust from there see where it feels best without pinging.

Re: flippen summit ignition box

i just thought of something else. I wander if you could possibly have a bad dist. cap or rotor? you could have a hole in the cap causing an arc. just a thought.
