Need help with code 14
Ok first off lets say my car was running ok and then all of a sudden it died. Got it running again by holdin gas wide open to get it started. I thought something was cloggin the fuel system. I had no way of gettin it home and i was pissed so i had it towed to my mechanic. Hes a trustworthy mechanic. He found out that the computer was showing a coolant temp sensor, and he put a new one in. Well it ran great and everything.
It was like 45 today so i took it out for a nice long cruise on the highway as 45 is warm compared to what we have had. Well got home and let the car sit for a couple hours...went to try it again...nothing. Wont start. It cranks and gets spark. I checked codes and got 14 again!!!. It has a brand new sensor in it. Radiator looks good and coolant is the right color. I know this thing cant be getting to hot. The temp sensor works and it doesnt go over 200. Why is this kicking a code. Im confused? Could I just need a new thermosat?
I mean earlier on in the day I did go out and do a 1/4 run with the g-tech meter. Its stock except for an intake and i ran a 9. someting in the 60ft and a 17.45 in the 1/4. I didnt think that was to shabby for a stock six. I wont be going on Pinks any time soon but its still a fun lil car. Either way i let the car cool down for like 3 hrs before i went out on the highway so i know it wasnt like i was beatin the snot out of the car all day. Please help!

You need to find out why you’re getting the code.
The new sensor could have gone bad however it's improbable.
More likely the connector not making good contact.
When the comp gets the wrong info it gives you the wrong amount of fuel.
Happy Racing!

Re: Need help with code 14
An open contact would indicate low temp. A false high temp reading would likely be caused by a short. Check the condition of the pigtail that connects to the CTS. Do a continuity check between the two leads.
A replacement pigtail can be had at AZ or one of the others.

Ok well i check the connection and it looks good. I did not trace the wire all the way back tho. For some reason Its reading a high temp. As far as i can tell it is a false high temp reading. I think i would know if it was overheating. Right now im in South Carolina for 2 wks on vacation. Once i get back ill have to check it again. Its really annoying as it messes with my fuel milage and sometimes the car wont start. Hopefully i can figure this out soon.

Re: Need help with code 14
ok everyone its been some time...well the code went away for awhile and all was good. The other day it started spiting a code for a lean mixure at the o2 sensor(13) and the coolant temp sensor problem again(14)....well i put a new o2 sensor in it as it was the original one. That code went away. Well i had some time tonight so I found out that the lead had been pushed in on the black wire of the pigtail connector on the coolant temp sensor. Well i finally got that all fixed and all put back together. Cleared the codes from the computer and started her with hopes of everything being all fixed. NOPE! I checked computer and codes were all clean. Just 12 which is what is supposed to happen. Then as soon as i took the jumper wire off went to off on the ign. I then went to start her and i noticed the fan imeditaly turned on so i tried to start it anyway and see if it would maybe learn that it was all fixed. NOPE code is back on. How can this possibly read a high temp when the car has sat for 2 hrs as i worked on it and then never started it. Is it possible my computer is shot or something.
I also have a problem with my speedo shuting down randomly. I know these things are not connected in any way. But sometimes the 14 code goes away while im driving(ses light goes away at least) and the speedo comes back on. It just doesnt make sense at all. I know the wiring is good and the sensor is not even 2 months old now. It cant be broke already. Im so confused. Please help

Pull the pigtail lead off of the CTS and check continuity between the two wires. If they're shorted, replace the pigtail connector if you haven't already.
If they're not shorted, leave the connector off and see if the code shows. That will tell you whether it's the CTS.

Re: Need help with code 14
ok guys...it was 70 somethign today...it was beautiful out....car all of a sudden worked on the way to work...seemed like it was lacking some power but no codes and it ran better and i had my speedo back. Well it kicked back on on the way to my security job and then on the way home from that. So i checked everything over again. I have continutiy. I checked mulitple times to make sure. I replaced the pigtail not to long ago as it wasnt lookin to good. I took it off and tried it. Still getting the code. I know the sensor is good as it was new. But i got another just to make sure. Still no good. Now im done putting money into it. Im broke as it is so i cant just keep throwing money at it. Im very confused on why it isnt working. Another thing that is VERY strange is that if im throwing the code the speedo gauge doesnt work(speed, odometer, and trip)...but earlier when the code went away i have everything back. Its like somehow they are connected somehow. This is why i think something with the computer is messed up. Or is possibily the VSS module somehow causing the car to read a false high temp at the CTS. Im so confused. Its going to be 80 tommorow and i really wanted to just cruise as i just got new rims and tires on the car...Here in western new york 80 is a HUGE deal. **** 60 is nice weather. Please someone help me. I have no money to just take it to a shop and say fix it or else i would. Ive tried everything that i can think of and have tried what others have suggested. For some reason this thing just doesnt work.

Re: Need help with code 14
If the black and yellow wires are shorted going to the pigtail you'll need to trace them down and find out why. Your VSS is not connected to the CTS circuit, but you may have something crimping the harness somewhere that's shorting or breaking both sets of wires.

Re: Need help with code 14
thank you for that pdf file. I had one but it didnt tell me what pin number everything went to on the computer. Well i have continuity to the ecm through the yellow wire. Do you know where the black wire actually grounds out at? I tried to trace it but cant find it. I think that might be the problem. I went out driving yesterday and light and everything was on and it ran like crap. I got pissed and downshifted and punched it and all of a sudden light went off speedo came back on and everything ran good again!. The light was back on this morning!?...For some reason the speedo still goes off when the light comes on...only code showing is 14(high temp at CTS)...i get paid this friday and might just take it to the shop and say fix the ****** thing....im so sick of checkin and messin with the wires.
