87 IROC engine build

i am wanting to build a 350 bwhp engine. i was wondering if anyone could throw out a build for me. im in the military and dont have alot of time to get on the net and search out parts that will match well.

im wanting to keep the TPI i have.

parts and plans i have had in mind are as follows:

AS&M runners (already have them)
TPiS intake base
plenum will be port to match the runner
AFR 180cc or 195cc heads
cam (unsure of something w/ no more than .550 on a 112 LSA)
Hooker 2055s (already have them)
Hooker Catback (already on the car)
ingnition coil going to switch to a hotter one and leave the stock dizzy

trying to keep the build between $3K and $4K.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 87 IROC engine build

building takes time ... take the time to research what you want to build, ie a drag car, daily driver ect. i think youll be much more satisfied designing and building it your self. read what others have done and what there results were. matching componets is the important thing.

Re: 87 IROC engine build

forgot to mention that it was going to be a daily driver. im asking for help b/c i get about 10-15 mins a days to hit the web so i dont have alot of time to search for a good set up. im currently deployed so that is the reason for the lack of time. and i'd like to pick up the missing parts while im gone so i have them waiting for me when i get home.

was hoping others could throw out there ideas and fill in the missing parts of my list, and point me in the right direction if anything i have already will be a good combo w/ something.

Re: 87 IROC engine build

was wondering how well this cam would work w/ the heads i have in mind, comp cams p/n 08-300-8? was probably going to go w/ the AFR heads p/n 917 180CC L98 58CC chamber eliminator street heads. heres the specs on the heads:

180cc
L98 plug
75cc combustion chamber milled down to 58cc
Milled by Airflow Research
CNC'D
1.290 OD dual valve spring w/dampener
135 lbs on seat
.600 max lift
23 degree
Stud mount rockers
No steam holes drilled
NOT compatible with self aligning rocker arms
Center and perimeter bolt
Completely assembled
Exhaust port raised .100 over GM L98 heads
2.020 intake
1.600 exhaust

what you all think???

Re: 87 IROC engine build

for a daily driver im thinking 198 intake 160 exaust and a rv cam, nothing radical. good power through out the rpm band. slight lope. piston type should determine cc . you want to use pump fuel but do you want to use premium? what kind of hp do you want to get?

wanting to get in the neighborhood of 350 bwhp. i use premium now car runs beeter on it. going to keep the bottom end stock since it can handle up to 500hp, will just rebuild it.

Re: 87 IROC engine build

im thinking of maybe using the edelbrock e-tec 200 heads and their vortec base now. i can get these heads a bit cheaper and they flow better. now all i need to do is figure out my cam.

any thoughts?????

Re: 87 IROC engine build

if you can go with a roller cam, and roller rockers. if you use a mild cam youll most likely be able to use a rocker with 1.6 ratio. but that will depend on the piston type. i woundnt go with any thing more than a flat top piston. ill have to look at my build sheet but i get over 400 horse AT THE FLY WHEEL with a simular set up

was thinking of using this cam, comp cams p/n 08-300-8. im probably going to leave the heads as they come, i think they are 1.5 but not sure.

what is your set up?

Re: 87 IROC engine build

what type of piston you going to run? i think your on the right track.

i have a 400 ci bored 30 over, eagle crank stock size , ground and rebalanced rods, flat top pistons, cant find the spec's on my cam but it tops out at 3500 rpm, timing gears instead of a chain, the heads are 198 160 ported and polished, 1.6 rockers, it is a special purpose eng. tons of low end torque. i use it for hill climbs and auto cross. as a daily driver its ok if you can afford the fuel. lucky for me i live next door to my work.

Re: 87 IROC engine build

i was planning on using the stock bottom end since it can handle up to 500hp. im trying to build this on a budget if i can. i dont want to exceed $4K. the heads are going run me between $1500 and $2000, im shopping for the cheapest price.

im once again unsure of what heads to use, AFR's or E-tec's. Most reviews here are pro AFR. so now im leaning back to the heads im mentioned the specs for in my earlier post. here's the link for them: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=270361061860

not sure if the cam im wanting to go w/ would be to small, comp 08-300-8. here's the link for the cam:

Re: 87 IROC engine build

im sorry, you said stock bottom twice i just wasnt paying attention. the e tec heads sound good. with the stock pistons you should be able to run a bit more lift on your cam. ill do some looking and see what i can find

Re: 87 IROC engine build

i think im going to go w/ the AFR 180cc heads for sure. the cam im unsure of. got 3 options comp cams 08-300-8, 08-304-8, or 08-305-8. leaning towards the 08-304-8 it has a .500 lift and a 114 LSA.

Re: 87 IROC engine build

if your going to use the stock 1.5 rocker you could go with a little more lift. but the 500 should work ok. just watch the over lap you dont want too much. the more over lap the higher the rpm range.

well the cam has changed im going w/ a comp 08-466-8 w/ the same heads. ive thought about changing the rockers to 1.6, not sure yet. i could always leave it for a furture mod.

The XFI would be the much better choice.

Forget the 1.6:1 rockers. Unnecessary.

Re: 87 IROC engine build

looks like that cam will have plenty of lift with the stock rockers. you may want to check and see if your going to need to change any thing with the elictronic controls, i have no clue.

Use the rockers for which the cam was designed. Most cams are designed for 1.5:1 rockers, the LT4 Hot Cam being one exception.

Just use 1.5:1 rockers.

Re: 87 IROC engine build

afr website sells 1.5 and 1.6 rockers for there heads. since i already have to buy rockers for the heads i figured why not get some performance from them.
