Timing chain slack, help please

Timing chain slack, help please

Is this to much timing chain slack, and if so could it cause a rattling sound when it hits the cover. Any imput would be greatly appriciated. Thanks.

Yup, way too much slack. You've lost the nylon teeth on the sprocket. Time for a new set.

Hopefully that is what caused the rattle. I know the 305's some of these cars came with would eat cams and bearings once they had that kind of play. I don't know about 350's or 383's. Hopefully someone else can provide more info.
