i need some feedback on my 355 engine
hey guys so i'm new to this forum but not new to cars.
I have a 89 camaro that came with a 305 tbi.
the 305 and tbi are loooooong gone
Its a weekend/dragstrip car
My best time all motor before the long tubes, true duals, electric water pump, and adjustable torque arm and old carb was 12.7 then i sprayed 100shot and went 11.8 spinning off the line
My setup is:
350 2bolt 2pce seal bored .030 over
block was decked just a lil tiny bit for correction
eagle forged rotating assembly with +100dome pistons
aluminum edelbrock RPM heads 64cc 170cc runners which i ported a lil bit
rpm air gap intake
1.6 fully roller rockers
electric water pump setup setup
cam .236/.242 @ .050 and its like .575 and .545 or something like that i lost the sheet
msd distributor
msd wires
msd digital 6 plus
1 3/4 mid length headers
true duals
3200 stall
fully built 700r4
9 bolt w/ 3.45s
lca
lca relocation
adjustable torque arm
the carb is a PRO FORM 750cfm that was modified to like 830cfm?
My questions are:
what can i do to make it better?
is my cam too big for my heads?
what would you guys do diferently?
how would you improve this engine?
i wanna go 10s this season with a bit more juice, maybe 150.

What did it run with this combo??
170cc runners on heads?? That's a bit small.....it takes a LOT to run 10's on small block.....

i now have 1 3/4 mid lenght headers, electric water pump, ported heads, ported intake, new and tune carb, adjustable torque arm, and 150 shot.
i'm hoping for low 11s with that setup

sweet, your probably pretty darn close then.....how much are you willing to spend....I was thinking stroker....and maybe some larger cc heads, like 190's or 210's (good for stroker)...
Re: i need some feedback on my 355 engine
or what if i get a bit smaller cam and keep my heads, would i see any improvement? i feel like my cam is too large for my heads

yeah...you maybe right, I don't know for sure...that's a tuff call...personally I would get new heads, but a smaller cam might bump you up...but I think the combo isn't right....even though your doing pretty darn good with it.. go for the heads....

i don't really think the cam is too big since you have 10.5:1 comp. but you definetely could use heads with some bigger intake runners. what is your 60' time like? if your just going to race this thing then you might want to look at a higher stall converter.

i think with the 100shot it was like 1.8xx on my old mickey thompson drag radials

were the 1.8's consistent? it sounds like you might need to adjust your suspension a little. also, if your running short tires (26") you might want to go a little higher, to like 28's or 29's- if that is the case, the taller tires will help either way because you will be able to launch harder and not blow the tires off and it will help to counteract that low first gear of the 700r4 (making it harder to spin the tires). remember, before you build a go-fast engine, you need to have a car that can hook consistently or all the power is useless.

All motor i get lows 1.7.
The tires make sense since i'm on a 16" rim now and my mickeys seem kind of low profile old and not sticky. I will try some 28's and hope for a 1.5xx with a sticky tire.
How does the engine setup sound? what kind of number do you think i'm putting down as it is right now?

Re: i need some feedback on my 355 engine
back in the day when we first started toying with my buddies turbo buick we ran into a very similar problem; it was like 1.7's 60' and we did small turbo upgrade and a down pipe and the 60's went to crap. we kept throwing pinion angle at it, lowering tire pressure, yadda, yadda...then it dawned on us...it still had 26" tires on it. threw some 28" tires on it and the 60's were better than before. also, you may want to look at a steeper gear set...like some 4.30's or so.
as far as the power your making...those heads are choking you...and if your just racing this thing then you might want to look at a victor jr or super vic manifold. is the cam you have a crane hyd roller? the specs look similar to one of their cams. with those small heads, your probably in the 400 - 415 range @ flywheel...but you never really know until you put in on a dyno.

You could pull good 60s with the 26 inchers, just going to take the right setup. Orr was pulling 1.5s and 1.4s with his setup. I was pulling 1.7s with a 255/50-16 BFG drag radial with no problm. I think you could use the better heads and dail in the rest of you combo. We had a mild 92' Rs with a 355, 670 TBI, comp 212/218, 3000 stall, Spt IIs do 12.7 @106 with a 1.7 first time out with a mild street tune and bad Tranny. What did you trap?
Re: i need some feedback on my 355 engine
my cam is a comp cam its a hydraulic flat tappet. i lost the sheet ill see if i can find it tom.
when i went 12.7 i trapped 113
and when i went 11.8 i trapped like 120
I would like to stay with my air gap since i still drive it on the roads and cruise around town.
i was thinking about going with 4.11s to get out of the hole faster.

At 113 you had the power to run 11s you just needed to dail in your setup. Going with more gear will make you traction problem worse. With the new parts you should be good to go.

i do concur, now that i see your mph; especially at 120 you should be in the low 11's...just play with your suspension some and see what happens.
you should be able to find better results with 26" tires, but i still think that 28" tires will make it easier for you to achieve your goals. just my .02.
