cam question
cam question
well im getting along with with tpi to 355 carb swap. the engine i picked up is a rebuilt 350 with 40k on it. my queston is with the cam. i want to go with the thumper series. i was thinking the smallest one would work best with stock heads. can i safely rev this engine to 5800 rpm. if i had a high volume pan and pump would this allow me to safely rev it higher?

Re: cam question
revving to 5800 is not too high....but the heads and exhaust might not allow it to rev that high....call comp cams and talk to a rep. to work out the detail with you cam would be the best idea.....what really kills you is the 2.73 gears you have...I would change those, and then change the cam after to match.....what is the part number of cam your looking at??

The market for the Thumper series is people who are more after a certain idle sound than performance. Does that tell you anything? Or, does that describe you?
Stock heads isn't so much the issue as is valve springs. What are you planning on using?
BTW, what "stock" 350 heads do you actually have?

Re: cam question
3.73:1 gears, then cam. If it's just an 8.5:1, smog-headed 350, you'll like it better with COMP's DualEnergy 275 cam.
Re: cam question
no i dont just want a cool sounding car i want power, the i like the tight lsa of the thumpers and that i dont have to rev it super high to make good power. i called comp and got the thumper cam along with there matching valvesprings and lifter. im going to go with 3.73s and a hughes 2500 stall converter. ill be taking the heads off tomorow to debure them and do a 3 angle valve job so ill get the numbers off them then, oh the engine is from '69
Re: cam question
ok well i was looking at comps thumpr brocheur and they could not make 400hp with 180cc rhs heads and the big thumper cam........i just filled out my return form, you guys win lol
