How to Remove Cruise Control
Hey guys,
I'm thinking of removing the cruise control system on my car as I do not think it works and I've never even used it or have any use for it.
I bought a new non-cruise control steering lever from Hawks, it's the one without the wire.
My question is how do I remove the cruise control system and what has to be removed? Do I just rip out everything I see?? Do I have to make changes to the ECM? Do I have to block off holes of some sort?
How does the lever come off? Do I just yank on it?
Thanks guys I haven't found anything of this sort of info on the whole site so far... I think it's good if anyone knows how the cruise control system works!

Re: How to Remove Cruise Control
to remove and replace the lever you have to dig into your steering column... there is no other way. You also need to replace the switch inside that the lever attaches to, otherwise all you're doing is getting rid of the pretty part that you see and not the functional part inside that you cannot see. You will need to fish wires down through your column for the new switch, do that at the same time as you remove the other ones... tie them together, it will make it easy, and pull the old ones through the bottom.

Re: How to Remove Cruise Control
What is inside his steering column!? Turn signal switch is the same and so is the cancel cam? I've put cruise control into my car, and all i did was drop in the cruise control computer, the suction part in the engine bay with the accelerator cable, vacuum lines, and the harness that goes through the firewall, along with the switch with a wire that runs through the column and the switch that the harness conects to on the brake pedel bracket with the according vacuum line.
Yes you need to get a switch that is non cruise control that has the appropriate wiper fucntion (delay or no delay), but other than that, there is nothing in the column according to the wiring schematic.
And to get that switch out fast, pull the turn signal arm out of the column so that it pops out and the wire is restricting you from pulling any farther, and then cut the wire. You will then be able to pull the wire from the bottom of the column all the way out. That is if you do not want to salvage the cruise control arm.
You do not need to worry about changing the brake pedal switch as the part of the CC harness that plugs into it is nothing more or less, it is still fully independant.
There will be a hole left in the fire wall where the harness goes through, but if you just cut off the harness at both ends, then the plug will remain in your firewall keeping it as weather proof as it has these past 23 years.
This is all coming from my experience on my '88 system, if i am wrong, please correct me and do not take any offense as to what I have said, as it is mearly my observation.
