Fuel Pump/ Idel Questions. HELP! wont start? but stays running?

PLEASE READ!!
Ok So a few days ago I installed headers, I left the o2 sensor unpluged Because the wire wouldnt reach. So it ran fine, But the engine check light would come on, and I drove it for a good day. Today It ran fine, then I hooked up the o2 sensor. It ran fine for a few mins then the next time I drove it it had like a idel surge, and ideld from high to low, hight low. surging. THen I shut it off, and it wouldnt start, and it WONT start unless I put some gas or something in the intake, then it runs, but shity idel. But Usualy when you first turn the key over to the on postition, you can hear the fuel pump go on for a few seconds. But it doesnt, also if I turned the key on the engine check light would go on (cause the engine wasnt running) now it doesnt.

So you think my fuel pump is bad? but if it starts (if i put gas in the intake) it stays running and doesnt just die, like I think it would if the fuel pump is bad.

its a 86 iroc, 305 TPI

No smog.
and headers, everything else stock.

Carbureted (like an '87), or injected? Either way, sounds like you've lost your cold start enrichment.

TPI Fuel injection. Yeah the fuel pump wont go on when i turn the key. But if I put gas in the intake it will start and stay running.

Check your fuel pump relay . You should have another relay under the hood you can swap in plac and see if that cures your problem . If it does you need a new relay .If it doesn't cure it you could check your fuel pump prime circuit .

That sounds like a wiring or relay issue

I guess it could be the pump failing. But check the relay first, and if that's good, then get a multimeter and verify the wiring.

Yeah it is on the driver side firewall . The wires should be two orange wires, blk/wht, lt blu , dk grn/wht . The orang wire next to the light blue and dark green/white wires should go back into a red/black wire in the harness that is for your fuel pump prime .

Yeah I unpluged the little harness that goes to the fuel pump above the rear end. And use a test like and has some one turn the key on and off to get the 3-4 second prime, and I wasnt getting anything.
