Timing with ESC connected is 20*???

Car is 89 2.8 V6, Just wondering if this is normal? Not sure how much the ecm/esc bumps the timing up but my car has been running off key since checking/setting the timing. Set it base at 10, clean, markings/lineup didn't move. Symptons include loss of power and occasional ping/pop from the intake... ANy help is much appreciated, did some searches but came up with no results.

Did you use the mark that lines up when #1 is TDC ?

Ignore where the ECM puts the timing. If the base timing is set properly, the ECM will adjust the timing to where it feels is the best.

Re: Timing with ESC connected ism 20*???

gotcha on the ecm advance adjustments! looked for a while for ranges on here, thanks! - so rotate the flywheel or I believe it's actually the crankshaft, the bottom pulley bolt? and when the rotor faces the #1 cyl. its tdc right? explain the mark part to me a bit i've never heard of the that, thanks. also fuel press. is at 40 (should b 45...) at idle. will do a prime check real quick and also change the fuel filter also. after about 3 hours press. drops to 20. pretty sure injectors are good, about 5 yrs. old accel. fuel pump 6/7 yrs old walbro 255lph. the info is definately appreciated towards solving my problem..

On the marks , you should have two or three slots in your harmonic balancer the widest mark is #1 and you want it on TDC #1 , the other marks are not needed for a timeing light .

So just make sure the widest slot is marked white right?

Re: Timing with ESC connected ism 20*???

I have the timing set right now, thanks for the help on that. Had two slots with white and I corrected that issue. Set it to 12*. Still has a random pop on acceleration though which I think is related to the number 3 plug arching through the boot onto the egr heat shield...
