Help!!!!!!

I have a rs 3.1 that i just replaced the fuel pump and filter in and now it idles rough and has no power when accelerating and dies some times. I know the car is running lean because i saw smoke coming from under the seat and i looked uner the car and the cat was glowing. I think it may be the o2 senser anyone know anything i can do?

Re: Help!!!!!!

Did it start idling rough immediately after the fuel pump/filter job? Or was that recently changed? Is the flow direction correct on the filter, they are designed in one direction.. though I dont think it would be a problem.

If you can test your fuel pressure, that would be best.

you could have another issue though... I have had BAD luck. Somehow my fuel pump and my crank position sensor died in the same moment on an 89 Beretta i had. It really didn't make any sense whatsoever, though I knew they died together because the car won't run without either one. Strange coincidernces are, well, strange.. but they do happen.

Anyhow, I don't know that the O2 sensor being off would allow the car to force itself so lean that it would be that bad... though I don't know personally. Try disconnecting the O2 temporarily and see what the car does. If it is the O2 forcing it lean, lack of O2 will make it revert to a more standard setting hopefully. When in doubt, test without. lol

Re: Help!!!!!!

bought the car bout a month ago and guy said it needed a fuel pump so he let it sit fo 5-8 years. so i put a new one in it and now it runns super lean. I drove it and i took it back to the dude who helped me do it and he said the o2 sensor was probly chacoaled and that will probably fix it if not i will need ecm

Re: Help!!!!!!

Check the fuel pressure at the rail and make sure it is up to spec. Low fuel pressure would cause it to run really lean in open loop modes.

Re: Help!!!!!!

Did you replace the small hose that connects the fuel pump to the sender? I had the exact same problem when I put a new fuel pump in , When I rechecked the new fuel pump the hose was split in the tank. It would start & idle, but no power & the cat was glowing. It cost me about .50 cents & 30 minutes to replace. ( I did the access panel above the sender when I originally replaced the pump) The car runs great now!
