Identify Motor

Hi, I know this has probably been drilled into the ground numerous times, and via searching i came along http://www.mortec.com/location.htm but i still need some help

in this general area: http://www.initips.com/~inittab/camaro/HPIM0124.JPG
i found what i believe to be 5.7L8 which identifies it as a 350. isn't the casting number suppose to be in the same area? i couldn't find it. Although there is a bunch of wiring harnesses in the way.

Basically what I want to know is what year the motor is. The valve covers are center bolt, and I also tried looking around the Waterpump area for another number cast into the block but couldnt find anything. Could somebody maybe post a picture with a nice big flashing red arrow pointing me to the promised land? Thanks.

Re: Identify Motor

The harness is hiding the casting number you want, but the "5.7LG" is evidence that this is an '87-up block. The last 3 digits of the casting number should be on the sides of the block, visible from underneath. The nubmers at the front are behind the water pump, just in front of the passenger side head, best seen from above. You may need to remove the alternator or a/c, whichever might be mounted in the way. That pad is actually an extension of the deck that the jhead gasket sits on, but the gasket won't be in the way.

Re: Identify Motor

The '88 Police Caprice 350 was carbureted, but any year of heads can go on that block, so there's no telling without more info.

I'd also add that the numbers on block deck on the passenger side are stamped, not cast. Sometimes you'll miss them because you're looking for cast numbers and not stamped ones.

Re: Identify Motor

alright so i crawled up under it. I didn't find anything on the side of the block on the drivers side but I did find some barely legible stuff on the passengers side. It looks like its printed upside down. the first thing on that side is "f 15" the second looks like "D N". if this isnt cast upside down i have no idea what it says I also took some new motor pics, don't know if any will help in identifying the motor. Looks like it has the emissions style dizzy and rochester emissions carb. I have not pulled the AC off yet because it looks like a nightmare but if none of this information helped I will.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Identify Motor

I did just crawl under it again and managed to find 3 5 0 on the passenger side front. still cant find a date anywhere. I'll pull the A/C Compressor tomorrow and look behind it but i looked all around back there and didnt see anything, maybe it's just the angle. or the plate is just gone.

Re: Identify Motor

So apparently after doing some research and digging around this is a TBI setup. Wonder what vehicle it came out of

Is there anything I should check to make sure the swap was done correctly? ECU etc.

Re: Identify Motor

about all I can add is that it sounds like a Canadian block, which isn't especially bad or good. It just is what it is.

Re: Identify Motor

If you can find the numbers, www.mortec.com has always been a great resource for me when it comes to ID'ing a block and heads.
