Cam end play?

So my engine is completely torn down. No heads, intake, distributor...etc. The only thing left in is the cam (Cam sprocket is off). The only thing left on is the cam retainer plate. My Camaro book says .004 to .012 of cam play is acceptable. I did not measure yet, but I am just curious if I need to have my distributor in before I measure it. Seeing as the gear on the cam will mate with the distributor gear.

Thanks guys!

Edit: Sorry. Found my answer. I just had to go quite a few pages deep to find it. The cam sprocket needs to be installed to check.
