Cam retainer question
Cam retainer question
Installing a new cam and heads on a ZZ4(roller) blockand just wanted to make sure the stock retainer plate that holds the cam is all I need. If you read Comps install inst. it talks only about the cam buttons and nothing about the retainer plates holding the cam in. Going with an aluminum cover as well. When I took it apart thats all that held it in. I'm thinking the cam buttons are for retro-fit stuff. Am I correct in assuming this? Also anyone have any trouble with the cam gear rubbing on the retainer plate bolts? Mine doesn't touch but its dam close. Summit sent me the wrong chain initially as well. Went with comp 2138 chain and there doesn't seem there would be enough room to run a cam button anyway. The cam gear bolt circle is way too small.

Re: Cam retainer question
I've put two cams in my 350 including a ZZ4. No button necessary - the retainer plate will work fine.
Not sure about the gear rubbing. I went with a Cloyes double roller timing chain and it works great.
Hope this helps.

Re: Cam retainer question
when i changed the cam in my LB9 i ended up getting a double roller set for a non roller engine from summit. the bolts were really close to rubbing so i switched to a counter sunk internal hex head bolt now theres loads of clearance.
