Knock sensor coolant leak

From the new guy with dumb question. " what keeps the coolant from running out of the hole in the block casting when the knock sensor is removed from a 305 Vin F???? I removed my knock sensor to replace it and decided to clean out the bottom of the tapped hole in the block. Opps...I puntured something that looks like brass covering in the bottom of the hole and coolant poured out on my head. OK I guess I did something bad but how do I fix this problem? I can't find any references in the manual or on line to "freeze plugs or expansion plugs, etc in that location. Thanks for any help.. My wife already thinks I am stupid for this "snafu"...

Re: Knock sensor coolant leak

The knock sensor is what keeps the coolant from leaking out. Put the new one in (that should have sealant on the threads) and forget about that thin layer of rust and debris you broke through.

In your manual it should mention to drain your coolant before replacing sensor its ok though I had no idea either until I put together my first motor lol

Re: Knock sensor coolant leak

lol that's funny ok number I have never seen a knock sensor's threaded boss to ever protrude into a waterjacket????? just put some teflon tape on the sensor's threads and screw it back in, or get another block.I am asumming you have new sensor, try my idea if it dosent work you will have timming issues,I highly doubt it. The knock sensor senses knocking and pinging vibrations in the engine telling the ecu to retard the timming, when your done with repair clear the knock sensor code (if you had one) take it on a test drive and see what happens

Re: Knock sensor coolant leak

Happy conclusion.. Thanks to all who replied. You guys were all correct, altho I skipped the teflon tape idea as this would insulate the case from ground. MADMAX you were spot" on" ,the bottom of the hole was just a layer of CRUD!!! I chased the threads and I now know that, indeed , the knock sensor screws right into the water jacket on this small block..THANKS AGAIN.." I have always relied on the kindness of strangers"

Re: Knock sensor coolant leak

yes knock sensors and temp sensors etc dont need sealer on the threads.

most ppl dont realize this and that they need to be in contact with the block iron

these kind of fittings have plumbers pipe type of theads in which are self sealing, unlike bolt threads etc.

good luck!
