1989 iroc cant start!

hi guys i just bought my first car its a 1989 iroc and its in unbelievable condition with no rust and small little dent on the passenger side door. its got a 305 tbi automatic trans. i bought it off craigslist for really cheap because the guy couldnt figure out what went wrong with the car. first it would crank at all. so i bypassed the vats. bought a new starter because the solenied was getting jammed up. but now there is no fuel going into the engine. so then i checked the fuel filter and it looks pretty new but the guy put it in backwards. put back in the correct way. it now cranks sounds like its about to start and then just dies away. i checked the fuel pipe that goes into the egnine and there is just a few drops of fuel dripping from it instead of it spraying out. i guess there is no fuel pressure building up.
any help would be aprreciated

How did you bypass vats? Did you do the resistor bypass or just jumper the starter enable relay?

Yeah, I've got the same set up on my 89 RS. And, hey, you're in Michigan, too. How bout that?

Could be the fuel pump. Do you have a Haynes manual? You'd have to pull the carpet out of the back, and get to the gas tank. Then, just turn the lock disk, and pull the pump out. There's four lines that are connected to the pump, plus three electrical wires, if I remember correctly.

I think I was able to get mine out in like... 10 minutes. It isnt a huge project. Good luck.

You ever need parts, let me know. I've got a bunch for cheap, probably about an hour from you.

It's either that or your ECM.

Re: 1989 iroc cant start!

so ive been working on my car. the problem right now is that the motor starts but there is no fuel in it to keep it running. i think its the fuel pump but the previous owner said he just put a brand new fuel pump in it. but yet he put the fuel filter in the wrong side so i dont really know i can trust him. the other thing which may be the issue is the fuel pump relay. i dont think the ecm is working right becasue in the haneys manual it says there is suppose to be 12 v going though the fuel relay and right now its only getting 0.4.

Re: 1989 iroc cant start!

My experience with previous owners has only ever been bad. Except the car I bought with no engine in it, for parts.

It could be that whatever killed the previous fuel pump may still be a problem and has killed the second one. Or, maybe he put the wrong pump in. I'd start with taking a look at the current fuel pump. Which, like I said, isnt a huge job, at least once you get the carpet out.

The fuel pump relay might be another thing worth replacing, as it's only about 15 bucks for a new one. If it's not showing the right voltage, that could be your problem, right there.

Re: 1989 iroc cant start!

first i found out that the fuel pump fuse was blown so i had to replace that and then i had to jump the fuel pump relay because thats all messed up and then it still didnt work so i decided to check the fuel pump and there was no access panel for my car . so it did end up being a really huge job. took the tank out from underneath took out the pump and there was this rubber hose that connects to the pressure pipe and that was just all disintegrated and mushy. so just replaced that. and now it just starts like a brand new car.

the first thing i did once i got it running was a few donuts and burnouts...and i found out that the differential is welded.

im going to be working on my interior tommorow since it all came gutted
and the best part is the guy i bought it from sold
2 sets of interiors black and grey
extra back + front bumpers
passenger door
hood
back glass
tail lights
side mirrors
and a bunch of other small extra parts plus the car for just 1500$

plans for future:
1) drop a 383 in it
2) 6 speed manual
3) rear disc brakes

any suggestions ?

Rear disc brakes, I understand are a real pain to get in. But if you're really going to drop a 383 in it with a 6 speed, you might as well go all the way, right? I'm glad as hell you got the car running.

Make sure to do your interior work well. Feel free to put up before / after pics, too.

Re: 1989 iroc cant start!

im just wondering...i got t tops and dropping a 383 in it will it twist my chassis? because i have heard some rumors and that gm did the same thing to when they cars were being produced. they never made an iroc with a 350 with t tops...or if you wanted that you had to get it specially ordered and sign a waiver form.

so that means i would have to strengthen my chassis and i have no idea how.

plus i my t-tops leak like crazy so i got to get all that fixed too.

If it is true, you might just get lucky and bend her so they don't leak. It worked like that on my buddies f100. We were in a burnout competition and the passenger door that used to be sticky now works like a charm. haha!

Lies and fabrications. Irocs with 350's and t-tops were produced.(I have one VIN code 8) There is a GREAT chance that the car will twist with the 383 IF...you can get it to hook up.
