305 rebuild questions

So I've yanked out the engine and tore it down and it looks like I need a new timing set. Am I correct that my 305 has a roller cam?

My main goal was to just replace all the gaskets and get it back on the road. Is there anything else I should really do while I have the engine out? I really don't want to put to much money into this engine, I'd rather save it for a 350.

thanks all!

Re: 305 rebuild questions

if you're going to put a 350 in, now is the time to do it if you have the motor out. check with some of your local machine shops, they might have a rebuilt 350 waiting for a home, it'd prob be cheaper than rebuilding the 305.

Re: 305 rebuild questions

I would love to just get rid of the 305 right now, but I really don't have the money for the 350 and all that it entails.

Right now I am looking at a new gasket kit and a new timing chain set as the only parts I need to "rebuild" the 305. Unless people have some other inexpensive things to do to the engine while I have it out, which is the main reason for this thread.

I really just want to get it back on the road in good running condition.

Re: 305 rebuild questions

you should have a factory roller cam, but why do you have your engine out in the first place?

Re: 305 rebuild questions

I decided to yank the engine for a couple of reasons:

1. I took it in to the shop because it was stalling out and wouldn't restart when it got to operating tempature, my mechaninc suspected a blown head gasket.

2. It had been loosing power over the last couple of years and has 135k miles.

3. It definetly needs new gaskets in a couple of places because it is covered in gunk.

4. I wanted to remove the AIR system, install headers, and remove the AC.

5. I wanted to get my hands dirty.

Re: 305 rebuild questions

Does this look like the right gasket kit to get?

Re: 305 rebuild questions

So I guess I'll keep this thread going since my next question is along the same lines.

How do I go about cleaning up the block and heads to get them ready for reassmebly/new parts and paint?

Re: 305 rebuild questions

I've taken it down to a short block, I don't really want to mess with the bottom end.

Re: 305 rebuild questions

try a wire brush and some degreaser, that should clean it up fine.

you might consider a cam swap since you have it torn down, you can prob get an LT1 cam fairly easy, cheap and improve perfomance.
