Check out these heads
Okay, I think that I got a pretty good deal on these heads (081) a while back. I just want to know what you guys think. The guy I bought them from said that they had a valve job, were machined for 1.94" intake valves. Screw-in studs and guide plates were also installed. He was sort of un-specific when it came to springs and other hardware, saying it was new and for a ZZ4 cam. Ultimately I would love to be able to slap a comp xfi260 in with these heads (after some porting) and call it a day, but I doubt it will be that simple.
Anyways, the intake valves are definitely 1.94", and it is kind of hard to miss the screw in studs and guide plates, what I am concerned about is the springs and other hardware. Can anybody tell anything from these pictures? Excuse my ignorance, but it seems that there is different hardware on the intake springs than the exhaust springs? From what I can tell, the springs have an outer diameter of the springs is 1.32" is it likely that these are LT4 springs if they were associated with a ZZ4 cam? If they are should I be good to around .500" lift? (SDPC2000.com says LT4 springs are good for .525) I know there are other issues like clearance, but I should hope if this were set up for a zz4, those issues would be taken care of. Anyways, take a look at the pictures, and let me know anything that jump out about these heads. I need all of the info I ca get on these unidentified parts!

Re: Check out these heads
they look like stock 081's. i cant judge the measurements from the photo though.
i like the 081's and you can get a lot of work out of them but you have to put some in too.
the springs and tops look stock.
i cant tell if the valves are stainless steel.
why guide plates? the 081 and the zz4 run great with self aligning valves. valve guides are sort of useless.
did you get the zz4 springs with the cam? they will handle .530 lift all the way around. the zz4 runs .474 and .510 so they will work well.
let me know if you need a set.
the heads do need some work.
port and polishing will add lots of hp.
i cant tell how the quides are doing.
take them into your local machine shop and ask them.

Re: Check out these heads
I did not get a zz4 cam. I was told that these were built for a ZZ4 cam. I know they arn't completly stock since I measured the intake valve at 1.94". Don't alot of GM spings look similar? What do your ZZ4 springs look like?
It is a little strange that it came with retainers, but it will workout well for me since I have a set of comp magnum 1.6 rockers on my car right not (has 416 heads now) and I would like to use them even though they are not self aligning.
I am going to take the springs off now. What should I look for once they are off? Is there anyway to identify springs. I will be a little miffed if these are infact stocker springs.

Okay, I got the springs and the valves out. Whats the deal with these valve seals? When I changes the seals on my 416's that are completly stock, there was a seal attached to the valve stem. These things looke like they are attached to the guides? Is there a trick to getting them out, or do I just yank them off w/ some plyers?

The Valves have part numbers on them Exhaust = P 1590C +15

Intake = 11476 + 15
What is all of this +15 business?

After getting the springs and stuff off, they do look alot like the stockers in my 416's. Why on earth would someone do work on heads and leave the stockers on, I do not know. That is unless he just put them back on to sell them!

Anything you can tell me about these things would be apreciated! I haven't looked at a whole lot of stockers, so I dont know what it is supposed to look like.

Re: Check out these heads
well i talking from where the sun dont shine but the valve seals come in two types - those that cover and those that dont. because the exhaust needs nore oil on them and the intake requires less - oil not good for combustion, the cover seals are usually put on intake only.
you can use them for the exhaust too, but you have to use a rat tail file on them to open them up a bit. i like vitron valve seals - about 15.00 a set of 16.
i have to find my notes on my 081 heads.
the caps are crap - they look very stock. i would just use regular ones and if you have the money go to 10 degree retainers and tops instead of 7 degree ones.
and before you think i am bright i got all that from my very knowledgeable friend, atilla the fun.

I used viton seals on my 416's on both the intake and exhaust, that is what i am used to. I have never seen ones like these.
