HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

90 Camaro Iroc-Z 350 TPI

When i bought the car it had been sitting for 4+ years and never started, i couldnt hear the fuel pump turn on when i put the key in the ON position so i replaced the Fuel Pump, tank, Sending Unit, and Filter. Problem Fixed, Pump Primes when key is in ON position, and primes again after trying to start it.

I dont know how much pressure is at the fuel rail, but if i depress the schrader valve it sprays out with a decent amount of pressure.

I have 12v at each injector, but i dont have a noid light or test light to check for pulse, only have a basic DVOM, any way i can check pulse with it?

I can spray starting fluid down the throttle body and it will run for a second but then dies from lack of gas.

Trying to figure out if my problem is in the Ignition Control Module, ECM, Clogged Injectors or elsewhere.

Let me know what you think, and any other tests i can run without buying and replacing parts as an attempt to diagnose the problem.

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

get a fuel pressure gauge and check that. try doing a search for the right PSI. did u check the resistance of the injectors to make sure they are all good?

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

injectors had 17-17.2 ohms, noid light confirmed injectors pulsating.

will check fuel pressure at a later date

could it be the timing way off?

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

Fuel Pressure at rail after prime is 43
Injector Resistance is 17 ohms
Injectors are pulsing, confirmed with a noid light and they have a constant 12v at each one
engine turns over
spray starting fluid into the throttle body and it starts up for a second or two
what else could it be???

any help is greatly appreciated

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

unplug each injector one at a time. Try to start the car after each one. If it ever starts, the one that is unplugged is bad. Same thing happend to me and my 90 IROC.

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

got it started, took a rod and tapped each injector a little bit, played with the timing some more, and could hear it getting fuel in 1 cylinder. played with it some more and it fired up eventually.

Now its running really rough, gotta buy a timing light and check actual timing, and possible run it long enough to get that old gas outta there.

will keep updated

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

If you don't have a timin light, you can hook up a vacuum gauge up and adjust the timing by looking for maximum vacuum. I have not done this yet, i just read about it earlier this week so I cannot attest to how accurate it is but an engine is nothing more than an air pump. The more vacuum the better tuned it is.

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

i will just buy a timing light, they are really cheap when you work at a parts store.

going to set timing correctly then run engine to normal temp to make sure all the old gas is out of the lines, then do a full tune up and go from there.

I will try pulling off 1 injector at a time, see if that helps it at all

Now time to figure out why my tach is pegged out to the right, why oil pressure is sitting at 60, why my car freaks out when i put it in drive(almost as if the engine is trying to jump out of the car).

ahh the joys of buying a 20 year old car that sat up for many years...so many problems at once but will be well worth it in the end

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

dont know where i read or, or if i read it, or if i imagined it, but something or someone told me to tap on the injectors, like if there was some kinda deposits sitting in there, clogging them up. so i took a metal rod and tapped on them gently.

I honestly have no idea if that did anything or not, but when i went to crank it back up i could hear 1 cylinder getting fuel and spark, so i tapped them all again and sprayed deep creep down the throttle body and it started up and stayed running.

So either tapping the injectors did something, Deep Creep works Miracles, or the engine stopped being a ***** and started up

Deep ceep is the best stuff for cleaning out the motor without taking it apart.

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

spray a good amount in there(about 5 seconds worth in each opening), let it sit a minute or two and crank it up, hope it works for you like it did for me.

If you have an O'Reilly Auto Parts close to you, pick it up there, its about $10 a can.

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

there should be an oil pressure sensor by the oil filter. if it doesn't sense oil pressure then the fuel pump stops. they are pretty cheap (about $14 bucks or so at o'reillys). it could be worth looking in to.

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

just an update, i continued to tap on the injectors, and have used about 1/2 a can of Deep Creep in the Throttle Body with a can of SeaFoam in the gas, and it is running alot better at idle

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

Sounds like a fun project to me. I would clean them with a soft brush and some deep creep. Get a 12v battery to bench test them as you go. Just let them pump some dc through them. That should get them clean.

Take your time, do it right, have fun!

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

might let them soak in a tub of SeaFoam or something similar over night

BTW i found the #4 spark plug wire up against the exhaust manifold, burnt to a crisp, replaced it and boy does that motor sound good now.

Re: HELP My 90 Iroc Wont Start

I ended up soaking the injectors with kroil oil over nite Sat. Then soaked with deep creep Sun. Got all but 2 unstopped. Put the 12 volts and pumped carb cleaner thru them.So now might just have to replace 2 instead of 8.
