Re: 89 Trans Am GTA cash for clunkers
Post #9 in that linked thread, is what bothers me..... "cash for clunkers specifically states the drivetrain must be in the shell, and complete when it goes on the flatbed to the junkyard."
It was my understanding, that the engine had to be destroyed.....
Engine & tranny could be pulled, but the shell could be sold &/or parted out afterwards? I'm not understanding why they have to be together when it leaves.

We all knew this was going to happen. Just too many idiots out there (at least 69 million of them in the U.S., apparently).
The dealer did not have to turn in the paperwork. He could have just given the person the $4500 and be done with it.
The person that turned the car in - may their new Mini spontaneously combust in their garage and burn down their house the day after their homeowner's insurance expires because they couldn't afford the premium payment because they just bought a new car.

definitely shedding a tear.
nothing states that you can't part out pieces from the vehicle. its only required that the frame itself and the motor go to the junkyard in the sky. stuff like sway bars, interior, etc, were definitely ripe for picking and would like to see live on in other cars.

This was easily the closest thing to bring me to tears, literally, in years now. I would have taken what I could have out of that interior. I woulda given people 20$ to go watch a movie while I stay at the shop, they ignore what may or may not be missing. I understand they want to change the amount of old to new in existance by killing the old gas heavy engines off, but that is a waste.

Re: 89 Trans Am GTA cash for clunkers
here is the thing with cash for clunkers...
The government doesnt care what car it is, if they can crush it, they will take it... as long as it isnt a 4cyl... Not gonna lie, i've seen a lot of POS old civics and accords running around polluting much more than that beautiful GTA.
I work at a Toyota dealership and right now we have 150 clunkers waiting to die... Problem is, we have been paid on 2...yes 2 of those 150 cars. That means that there is $500,000 that the dealership has put out that they have not gotten back yet. Not to mention, there are 2 cars there were denied... that means there are 2 people driving around in a brand new 2010 corolla or camry that have to bring those cars back and get back into their clunkers. It also means that we have to sell those 2 cars as used units now and lose a lot of money on them.
So far i have seen 2 Lexus SC400's, an 89 iroc, a 86 firebird(v6) and a few other great project cars just go to waste... We locked up our first vehicle today... a 99 ford windstar. Fine with me, get that POS off the road but dear god people, leave the collectors cars alone!

Re: 89 Trans Am GTA cash for clunkers
8-10k huh?
I've got a low mile '89 GTA, maroon, A4 with t-tops. better shape then the one in the link. It's been for sale for a year for way less than the $4500 the guy got for the clunkers program.
Since all of you are jumping up and down, which of you wants to pony up the cash for this one?

Auto trannies select gears themselves. If a tranny tries to drive in OD at 20mph, there is something wrong with the tranny, not the driver.
