Replacing camshaft. What else needs to be replaced to??
Well my car is a 305 carb. It has the stock 4 barrel quadrajet and a edelbrock 3701 intake with headers. I was going to change the camshaft but i was wondering what else NEEDED to be replaced. Ive heard you need valve springs/lifters/pushrods/timing chain to go with it. What can i get away with not replacing. My heads are stock 416's.

you need new lifters should be purchased as a set with cam for simplicity
springs are alway a good idea as i would guess yours are from 82 they get old and weak and probably wouldnt have been able to handle the new cams ramp rates anyway
pushrods can be re used
timing chain is something that could be inspected and reused depending on slack and gear wear however i would buy a timing set to have on hand if the old one turns out bad... and having it on hand i would probably end up installing it anyway if the old one is still useable

That is good about the pushrods cause them alone will cost 200$ and im trying to stay low on cash.

ya, springs. I would replace the dstributor gear and replace the roll pin that hold the distributor gear in place. distributor gasket, manifold gaskets, new timing chain and gears, harmonic balancer, new cam bolts, engine crankshaft bolt, timing chain cover gasket front oil pan seal, if you seperate the oil pan then new gasket there, timing chain front seal for crankshaft. optional bearing replacements for cam, carb gasket, water pump gaskets, valve seals, valve cover gaskets, T-stat gasket, fuel pump gasket (i recommend feel-pro's permadry for the valve covers and tstat, its reusable(no sealant required)),since the distributor is coming out, why not replace the pickup coil while youre there. BUT for budget purposes, you can order a cam change-over gasket kit, comes with a timing chain too. THATS JUST WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO TWO YEARS BACK.
the link doesnt include timing chain, but timing chains r 20 bucks, dont got gear drive (upsets the knock sensor)
