Ok, so i got my dads 89 rs and it wouldn't run when i first got it so i put these parts in...

maf sensor
new distributor
rotor
fuel relay
starter solenoid

and something else...

ok well after all that it still wouldn't start ok, so i asked my grandpa and he told me that he had a friend who worked for chevy and he told him that it was the coolant sensor ... ok i put that in and it starts! ok well now no matter how i turn the distributor with the timing light and everything... and it just wont run at all! when it gets to like 2k rpm i get really bad motor shake and i dont know what to do!!!!!

 

For starters ide set the timing to its correct setting as it should run correctly there and will not really run right anywhere else. The first thing ill ask are there any trouble codes present? Next ide pull a few spark plugs and see what color they are. Golden brown is good black is rich and white is lean. CHeck it out and let us know how it goes.

 

Just by chance... You are disconnecting the EST wire located on the firewall ( brown with black stripe wire ) right?

 

i tried doing the timing on my 87 TA and im having problems with it advancing itself.

I pulled the EST wire and set the timing, once i hooked it back up, the timing went back to how it was before... Its at something like 18* advanced. For my car, its supposed to be at 6*

 

The reason is by disconnecting the EST wire your taking the ECM control over the timing out. You set the base timing (which is where the ECM adjusts from) and reconnect the EST wire. Then the ECM will make adjustments to the timing by advancing from this base timing. So as long as your setting the base timing correctly that's ok.

 

ok lol... so i was messing with it today and i found out that my #2 and #8 wire were switched... ok so i was timing it and it sounds about right but there is still a little miss here and there mid range and up top... you guys think maybe one of my plugs got fouled when since the wires were mixed up?

 

Hey man I got a similar problem in my 91 T/A. When you said that the engine shakes really badly past 2000 did it die too? Since mine dies past that and cuts out/shakes pretty badly. Although I kinda doubt it, maybe a couple of my wires are switched too?

 

possibly mine died after it went pass 2k and came back down i would trace your wires! maybe it will

 

Yeah I'll get to that tomorrow, assuming that the weather holds up. I have a Haynes manual so it'll probably show the proper firing order.

 

Thats wierd that your car is doing it after 2k RPM.

My car is running rough UNTIL 2k RPM then it smooths out and runs normal until it shifts again.

I've been taking it easy so the car shifts at about 2k and i never get to feel the smooth acceleration
