loud noise when coming to a stop
loud noise when coming to a stop
hoping someone has encountered this problem before and can shed some light on this for me. its an 87 305 tpi trans am. the car has been over heating since my electric fan decides when it does and does not want to work. my problem is when it starts getting hot and sometimes when it is still sitting where it should be temperature wise the car makes a loud noise when almost stopped and continues when i am stopped. hard to explain what it sounds like... best i can do is it sounds like something is running comparable to electric fuel pump priming noise but way louder and its louder than the exhaust and noise of the car and embarrassing to pull up to someone with window down. i almost want to say its trying to suck water into radiator but i can have plenty of water in over flow and i notice nothing. its hard to pin point where noise even comes from. if i give car gas when its making that noise it stops right away. i hope someone can make sense of this and help me out...sorry i cant describe it any better...thanks in advance
Re: loud noise when coming to a stop
ok so i guess not describtive enough... so the car started getting hot again and me and a buddy took a look at it and it seems that the noise is coming from the exhaust or air injection hose. cat has been cut out and air injection hose is still there. any ideas why the car would generate such a noise from the exhaust or air injection hose????

Ozzy hell yeah, i seen that guy in 04'
I had bad noise problem with the electric fan motor loud and annoying. to test the fans connected the two diagnostic link's A and B terminal then turn key to on (not start=fried chip)(same one used to check the codes on the computer) as a biproduct by doing that, your fans will turn turn on high speed. when checking my codes once, the fans were sooo annoying i unbolted the fan and threw the fans motor. now its on the counter, been there for years. BTW a new fan motor run you about 30 bucks.

Re: loud noise when coming to a stop
its definitly not the fan making the noise...the suggestion about the egr valve, why would that make a loud noise come from the exhaust or air injection hose??

Re: loud noise when coming to a stop
If the cat has been cut out, but the AIR pump is still in place and functioning, where's the air from the AIR pump going? That's probably the noise - take belt off the AIR pump so it's not spinning and see if the noise stops. If it's serpentine, there's a rerouting instruction in the tech articles to remove the AIR from the system.
Re: loud noise when coming to a stop
ok ill take belt off and go from there. can the air pump be easily removed from motor?? i have not looked to see how its connected. thanks and i'll let you know if this was the issue
