91 3.1 v6 starts very briefly and dies

91 3.1 v6 starts briefly and dies. If you try to start again, nothing. If you turn off ignition and try again it starts very briefly and dies. Put some gas directly into the throttle body and it tried to run, backfired and started a small but exciting fire.
Fuel pressure is 40 psi, spark from coil is good. Has a code of 35, IAC sensor circuit fault. Will the IAC sensor fault keep it from running?
The manual I have access to isn't worth sour owl squat, trying to fix this for a friend and my ignorance is starting to show. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The IAC fault should not prevent running. You've established the fuel pressure, and that you have good spark. Can you test the resistance of each injector? A shorted (low resistance) injector can drag down the entire bank and prevent injector firing.

It could be a torn fuel pressure regulator diaphragm also. When mine got a small tear, the car would still run, but always wanted to stall from flooding.
